The Histology Laboratory Technician demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant and the commitment of Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.
This individual has documented training appropriate for the testing performed prior to analyzing patient specimens. Testing includes waived and moderate complexity tests authorized by the Laboratory Medical Director. The Histology Technician works under supervision of the Histology Lead Technologist and is trained to insure skills required for proper specimen collection, handling and processing are met. Skills required are: implementing of all standard laboratory procedures for cutting, staining and freezing tissue samples, proper specimen handling, preservation, transport and storage, proper instrument use, performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration, a working knowledge of reagent stability and storage and ability to implement quality control policies. The individual possesses an awareness of the factors that influence test results and the skills required to assess and verify the validity of patient test results before reporting.
Responsibilities
Follow the laboratory procedures for specimen suitability for testing. Perform waived, moderate and high complexity tests (with Technologist review) ordered by a physician or authorized personnel using approved methodology for test analysis. Report and maintain records of patient test results.
Maintain records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Adhere to the laboratory quality control policies. Document all activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed, including troubleshooting.
Comply with all Covenant and Laboratory policies, procedures and safety practices. Demonstrate working knowledge of appropriate safety protocol to include universal precautions, MSDS safety program, use of personal protective equipment in designated areas, and perform proper hand washing techniques.
Follow Histology Procedures for Specimen Processing, Embedding, Cutting, Staining and Tracking.
Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. Correct the problems or immediately notify the General Supervisor or Lead Histology Technologist.
Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
High school diploma and a completed Histology Technician program
HT (ASCP) Certification
Prefer a minimum of 6 months experience working within a hospital laboratory

Technical knowledge, skills and abilities as they relate to the various areas of the clinical lab.
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrate a positive attitude in the workplace showing dependability, cooperation, and desire to produce the most accurate, timely and cost-effective results.
