Overview

The Health Information Management (HIM) Manager is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of clinical documentation, DRG assignment, and coding optimization. This individual oversees medical transcription, chart completion, release of information, clinical documentation improvement (CDI), coding and overall, HIM operations to ensure timely, compliant, and efficient processing of patient health information. The HIM Manager demonstrates high‑quality customer service, professional communication, and strong leadership aligned with Covenant HealthCare’s Vision, Mission, and Values.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates excellent customer service in all interactions.
  • Ensures communication via telephone, email, and in‑person is timely, professional, and effective.
  • Responds promptly to and resolves customer concerns.
  • Contributes to patient satisfaction targets.
  • Contributes to organizational net operating margin goals.
  • Collaborates with physicians, coding staff, CDI specialists, and clinical partners to clarify documentation and improve DRG accuracy.
  • Develops, monitors, and manages the departmental budget.
  • Integrates financial data into operational and strategic decisions.
  • Supports improvements in case mix index (CMI), severity of illness/risk of mortality capture, and quality reporting.
  • Monitors productivity.
  • Manages HIM‑related Accounts Receivable (AR).
  • Monitors performance metrics and identifies opportunities for improvement.
  • Provides strategic leadership to support hospital and departmental goals.
  • Ensures timely completion of all departmental activities.
  • Collaborates effectively with department leaders, physicians, and organizational partners.
  • Leads staff through coaching, evaluations, motivation, and professional development.
  • Communicates effectively to encourage action, resolve conflict, and support change initiatives.
  • Delivers presentations and communications supporting departmental priorities such as AR reduction, customer service, and process improvement.
  • Leads and supports projects that improve workflow and interdepartmental processes.
  • Ensures the integrity of the legal medical record
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains current knowledge of HIM/CDI practices, regulatory trends, and accreditation requirements.
  • Completes continuing education and maintains required credentials.
  • Responsible for staff hiring, evaluation, discipline, and termination as needed.
  • Maintains involvement in appropriate professional associations.
  • Attend leadership meetings and leadership development meetings
  • Develop coordinators into strong organization leaders
  • Mentor students and visitors.
  • Maintains 24‑hour accountability for HIM operations. Ensures ongoing adherence to HIPAA privacy and security requirements

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • RHIA or RHIT credential; RN with medical record experience may be considered when paired with another RHIA/RHIT‑credentialed HIM leader.
  • Minimum three (3) years of supervisory/management experience.
