What are the responsibilities and job description for the Spray Technician position at Cove Communities?
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Perform, assign, and oversee all spray maintenance of grounds.
- Apply fertilizers, herbicides, and other agents for turf and landscaping maintenance.
- Identify pests and weeds and determine appropriate treatment methods.
- Read and follow technical labels and application instructions; calculate proper application rates and dilutions.
- Schedule and record spray applications.
- Calibrate and operate sprayer/spreader equipment (self-contained spray units, tractors, attached spray booms/spreaders).
- Maintain chemical storage areas, inventories, sprayers, and spreaders (e.g., changing hoses, cleaning screens).
- Ensure safety of work crews, citizens, and the environment during chemical applications, report unsafe conditions.
- Remove debris and brush from canals and ditches; perform canal bank maintenance.
- Assist in determining efficient work methods for assigned tasks.
- Maintain restricted-use pesticide licenses through exams and continuing education.
- Work independently with minimal supervision, including during non-standard shifts.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of ground maintenance practices, principles, and techniques.
- Strong knowledge of safety hazards and precautions.
- Skilled in using common hand tools and mechanical equipment.
- Ability to read, understand, and implement oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
- Completion of required NIMS Training.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Any related combination of training and experience.
- Public Applicator License through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (Core Applicator License), plus two (2) additional applicator licenses such as:
- Natural Areas
- Public Health Pest Control (Mosquito Control)
- Turf and Ornamental
- Right-of-Way
- Aquatics
Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to use hands, fingers, and arms to manipulate tools and equipment.
- Frequently required to stand and walk; occasionally sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Must be able to talk, hear, and see (close vision, distance vision, color vision).
- Must frequently lift/move up to 50 pounds; occasionally more.
- Requires frequent neck rotation, overhead arm extension, and ability to turn completely from a fixed stance.
