The County of Volusia is seeking an experienced Trades Worker/Senior Trades Worker - Working Title: Utilities Service Technician for the Water Resources and Utilities Division. This position will be working throughout Volusia County, and will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing; water & sewer mains, manholes, lift stations, and water meters, used in water/wastewater utility systems. Candidates should have basic computer skills and experience operating a dump truck, backhoe, loader, excavator, or other related utility construction equipment.
Note: May be required to work weekends, holidays, on-call rotations and during storm events or other emergency situations.
- Performs accurate record keeping via the Lucity work order system to document all work performed.
- Operates different types of small equipment and power tools such as pumps, generators, saws, drills, etc.
- Maintains county-issued electronics including cell phones and laptops.
- Maintains, cleans, refuels, and organizes vehicles, stocks vehicle with needed parts and equipment.
- May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
- Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
- Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
- Responds to emergency situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Participates with 24-hour emergency on-call response for Utilities Sewer Collection & Distribution.
- Installs and repairs underground piping and structures.
- Performs work in the replacement and installation of water meters, reclaim meters and radio read equipment.
- Responds to low water flow complaints; troubleshoots and repairs water leaks; tests water meters for flow and accuracy.
- Participates in the 24-hour emergency on-call response for Utilities Maintenance & Lift Stations.
- Performs general electrical repair and renovation of various types of switches, receptacles, etc.
- Installs, troubleshoots and repairs pumps, motors, processes equipment and electrical controls.
- Performs scheduled routine preventative maintenance of assigned facilities/equipment to ensure reliable operation.
- Utilizes a computer to monitor/diagnose lift station problems and repair of SCADA equipment.
All Utilities Service Technicians must have a high school diploma or GED and possess a valid Florida drivers’ license at time of hire. All certifications must be current.
Trades Worker - $18.77 -$33.43
This position performs semi-skilled work requiring the ability to perform tasks with little supervision.
High School diploma or possession of GED and two (2) years of experience electrical, mechanical, plumbing repair, or related industry construction experience.
A comparable amount of education and training may be substituted for the minimum experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license at time of hire.
Must obtain the State of Florida Water Distribution Level III License or FWPCOA Wastewater Collections Level III Certification within 18 months of hire (2,080 hours of work and a passing examination are required to obtain license/certificate).
Senior Trades Worker - $21.47 - $38.43
This position performs skilled journeyman level work requiring the skill to perform tasks with little to no supervision.
High School diploma or possession of GED and four (4) years of experience electrical, mechanical, plumbing repair, or related industry construction experience.
A comparable amount of education and training may be substituted for the minimum experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license at time of hire.
- Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools of one or more of the building trades.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.

- Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
