About the Position:
Under general supervision, the Animal Services Coordinator performs specialized animal behavior and care work. This includes planning an eventual outcome for all animals; treating and medicating animals; performing humane euthanasia; handling of domestic animals (including livestock); overseeing volunteer and foster programs; and a variety of general clerical support activities. They also provide information and assistance to the general public.
- Plans and organizes an eventual outcome for every animal housed at the shelter; coordinates placement of animals outside the shelter; research owner information of found animals; contacts rescue organization or foster families for animal intake.
- Ensures all animals are documented, photographed, and posted to the County website in a timely manner; performs daily inspection of each animal to ensure health, well-being, and outcome planning is being met.
- Assists with coordinating activities associated with shelter operations, including planning, assigning, and monitoring of daily activities and shelter staff. Oversees the daily operation of the shelter in the absence of the Animal Care Center Manager.
- Basic practices and techniques for impounding and caring for a variety of animal breeds and species.
- Common behavior and diseases of domestic animals, including symptoms and care.
- Safe and efficient handling of large and small animals, including restraint.
- Policies, procedures, and terminology associated with shelter operations.

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
- Two (2) year of experience in a clerical, customer service, or other related field, which includes public contact.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in animal sheltering or animal care related fields.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Requires a valid California driver’s license.
- Must be able to obtain appropriate “Certificate of Euthanasia” within six months of employment.
- Must be able to obtain a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substances Permit issued by the California Veterinary Medical Board within six months of employment.

In addition, Tehama County is establishing an eligibility list to fill future vacancies for an Animal Services Coordinator-Extra Help, as well as subsequent vacancies which occur during the life of the eligibility list.
New employees should anticipate being hired at the beginning step of the salary range. Candidates who exceed entry level qualifications may be considered, with approval from the Board of Supervisors, for placement at other than A step.
