 If so, the Sheriff's Office is seeking candidates for Telecommunications Technician Trainee!

 

The starting salary for this position will be based on the candidate’s qualifications at time of appointment.


About the Position 

This position will perform installations, maintenance, diagnoses, construction, and services to a variety of telecommunications equipment to include large public safety land mobile and microwave systems.  The complete description of the duties and responsibilities can be found by visiting the Telecommunications Technician Trainee job classification page.

Hiring Process and Timeline 

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below. 

  • Job Offer and Background Process begins shortly after the interviews conclude.
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Completion of a certified vocational trade school program in telecommunications, electronics, or a related field; OR,
  2. One (1) year of experience in the installation of mobile radios, radars, or other basic electronic systems.

Note: Additional years of experience as described above may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis; OR, completion of appropriate course work from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency may substitute for the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis. 


Blind Applicant Screening

Background Investigation 
 Incumbents must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Felony convictions may be disqualifying. Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Prior to appointment, candidates will be subject to a thorough background investigation which may include a psychological, truth verification or other examination or test.


Working Conditions
Exposure to high frequency noise and radio-frequency radiation including microwave radiation; exposure to noxious fumes; exposure to high voltage; working from antenna towers, ceilings, and other remote places; exposure to hot soldering irons; exposure to adverse weather conditions. This position is subject to emergency call on a 24-hour basis.

Condition of Employment

As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment.  Current County employees may be excluded from this process. 


Evaluation

The names of qualified applicants will be placed on an employment list for six (6) months based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications. Please ensure all information is complete and accurate, as the responses you provide on the supplemental application form will be reviewed using an automated evaluation system. If you are successful in the initial screening process, your application will be reviewed individually to confirm that the information you provided is accurate and qualifying.
