What are the responsibilities and job description for the Combined Sewer and Water Operator I position at County of Mason (WA)?
This classification is a level one (1) and responsible for assisting in the site maintenance and operation of wastewater treatment plants, collection systems, drinking water facilities, and water distribution systems of the County to ensure quality operations of wastewater and drinking water systems for the citizens.

- Monitor the wastewater plant processes and water system quality.
- Conduct maintenance and minor repairs on plant equipment, machinery, and systems.
- Assist in laboratory testing and analysis.
- Perform collection system and distribution system responsibilities.
- Locate and inspect new construction utility hook ups.
- Respond to customer complaints and questions.
- Respond to emergency operations concerns.
- Maintain grounds and buildings.
- Communicates effectively verbally and in writing.
JOB COMPLEXITY:
This classification requires the incumbent to be able to read and interpret the laws, rules and regulations relating to wastewater and drinking water systems; work independently, with limited supervision’ work within established policies, procedures and processes.
SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS:
Incumbents are required to know: The basic components of wastewater and potable water systems; laws and regulations regarding the operation and maintenance of wastewater collection, conveyance and treatment and disposition; and drinking water systems.
Incumbents are required to have the ability to: Perform duties accurately and timely; make accurate mathematical calculations; perform accurate laboratory tests and analysis; communicate effectively with the public, other employees and outside professionals; mentally and physically perform essential functions; work independently within established guidelines with limited supervision; handle multiple, multi-step tasks simultaneously; maintain effective working relationships with other employees in the department, other county departments and regulatory agencies.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Positions in this classification are not responsible for supervision of other employees.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed inside in a plant environment or outside either on the premises or in the field requiring the employee to work in all weather conditions and at improved and unimproved sites. Employees in this classification are required to be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, climb and dig to accomplish their work tasks and are required to operate field, plant, laboratory and office hand, power and electronic equipment and machinery. Incumbents in this classification may be required to move more than 50 pounds periodically.
(Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the job)- High School Diploma or equivalency and
- One (1) year of domestic wastewater system and drinking water system operating experience and
- Experience in monitoring and/or maintenance of mechanical systems.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Washington Driver’s License, incumbents are required to have and maintain a good driving record while employed by the County.
- Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator 1 Certification by Washington Department of Ecology
- Water Distribution Specialist Certification by the Washington Department of Health Drinking Water Program
- First Aid/CPR Certification
This position is required to follow chapter 13 of the Mason County Personnel Policy. If offered the position you must provide a Abstract Driving Record from the WA State DOL.
Salary : $65,024 - $73,569
