General Summary

Under the supervision of the Central Dispatch Manager and Supervisor, receive 911 and administration calls; and dispatches law enforcement officers, fire departments, emergency medical services throughout the Marquette County. Maintains radio communications with patrol units, specialty laws units (UPSET, Homeland Security Team, & SWAT), fire units, ems units, operates CAD, EMD, Texty, Rave, TLO, and a LEIN terminal, and searches and provides necessary information to officers.

Essential Functions

1. Receives calls for emergency police services, collects necessary information on location, nature of incident and status, information on suspects, weapons, and other information. Determines the priority of the call, which agency should respond, and whether the call requires more than one police unit.

2. Receives calls for emergency fire and ambulance, collects necessary information on location, nature of the incident, status, and other vital information, and dispatches to appropriate department.

3. Operates a Computer Aided Dispatch system and various other related telecommunications equipment. Dispatches appropriate unit(s) by priority and availability, utilizing familiarity with several radio frequencies, and the ability to tone out or page the appropriate agency. Communicates with field units using the appropriate terminology.

4. Keeps callers on phone as appropriate to provide status information on incident, provide instructions on medical situation prior to the arrival of emergency medical personnel, or otherwise assist in or stabilize an emergency situation. Asks questions according to medical priority program prior to arrival of emergency units.

5. Maintains knowledge of the location of cities, townships, and State/Michigan highways, county roads, streets and jurisdiction limits, hospitals, schools, major public and private buildings, housing areas, road and street construction, detours and other information that may impact emergency vehicle routing.

6. Monitors the movement of all law enforcement officers, status and maintains continual awareness of their location.

7. Assists departmental and other law enforcement personnel by making telephone calls to obtain information and call utility companies, wreckers, and others.

8. Operates a LEIN computer terminal to obtain information on subjects, vehicles, CCH, and other information and relay to officers in the field. Enters warrants, information on vehicles and stolen articles, and other data for agencies that do not have their own LEIN terminals, and enters personal protection orders, missing/endangered, for the County.

9. Serves as back up to front desk for non-emergency telephone lines, includes answering lines, responding to inquiries, directing calls, and taking messages.

10. Dispatches calls for various other PSAP’s and agencies such as Federal Law Enforcement, Coast Guard, Departments of Corrections and Michigan DNR Law & Fire. May dispatch calls for law enforcement agencies outside the County as necessary. Communicates with utility companies by telephone and the Road Commission by telephone and radio during various incidents.

11. Operates the computer system involved with maintain records. Inputs data on call, time of actions, and other relevant information.

12. Operates a variety of other equipment such as TTY, paging devices for volunteer agencies, play back device, national weather emergency warning system, fax machine, and other electronic/computerized equipment.

13. Performs a variety of administrative support tasks including keeping records and daily logs, typing, filing, and copying of reports and other documents.

14. Attends training as assigned to maintain and improve proficiency and comply with current and/or future standards/certifications/ continuing education credits.

Employment Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: One-year experience in a capacity requiring dealing with the public, preferably in a communications/telephone capacity. Some prior data entry or related computer experience with systems similar to that used at the dispatch center.

Other Requirements:

· Must complete LEIN operator training, emergency medical training (EMD), CPR/AED, 40-hour Basic dispatch course, 40-hour advanced dispatch course and complete appropriate training related to incident command ICS 100, 200, 700, & 800 all within one year of employment.

· Must complete and pass a 20-week internal training program made up of three 6-week phases and a 2-week shadow phase.

· Basic typing ability.

· Ability to multi-task.

· Ability to bend, stoop, and reach in order to operate equipment and perform other functions.

Working Conditions:

· Works in dispatch center.

· Works in area with radio, phone, and telecommunications equipment for prolonged periods.

· Ability to work varying shifts in a 24-hour day operations.

Pay: $23.41 - $26.24 per hour
