Acceptable Experience and Education
High school diploma or equivalent, and at least six (6) months working experience as an electrician and in service equipment installation, maintenance and repair;
Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certificates and Licenses Required
Must have or obtain by date of hire a valid driver's license applicable to job responsibilities, with a driving record acceptable to the County of El Paso.
Must meet continuing education requirements to retain licensure(s) – Texas (every 2 years) National (every 3 years).
Essential Duties
Repairs and/or replaces electrical equipment. Involves: Responds to scheduled or emergency situations. Troubleshoots problem. Identifies, undertakes, and/or recommends parts purchase and inventory, repair, replacement, maintenance and/or other work required. Inspects electrical equipment and/or systems. Repairs and/or provides preventative maintenance services. Tests and validates results. Operates standard or specialized vehicles and/or equipment utilized to perform duties. Maintains/updates files, records, reports, and logs.
Installs new and/or enhanced electrical services, equipment and/or systems. Involves: Researches and identifies costs, parts, supplies, equipment, and materials. Calculates electrical circuit requirements for present and future needs. Gathers materials and supplies. Wires, connects, tests, validates, and maintains new service or systems. Coordinates electrical service needs and schedules with other trades, vendors, contractors, departments, and others. Installs, removes, constructs, welds, paints, refurbishes and/or performs other tasks associated with electrical installation and depending on area of assignment;
Plans layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes; plans layout of construction, installation, or repairs; connects wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components; installs electrical components, equipment, or systems;
Tests electrical systems or continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, using testing devices, such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, or oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system; tests electrical equipment or systems to ensure proper functioning;
Uses a variety of tools or equipment, such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment, such as oscilloscopes, ammeters, or test lamps.
Inspects electrical systems, equipment, or components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes; inspects electrical or electronic systems for defects.
Assists in preparing sketches or follow blueprints to determine the location of wiring or equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes; assists in creating construction or installation diagrams;
Diagnoses malfunctioning systems, apparatus, or components, using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem;
Works from ladders, scaffolds, to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures.
Places conduit, pipes, or tubing, inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas, and pull insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits between boxes.
Communicates with other construction or extraction personnel to discuss project details.
Installs ground leads and connect power cables to equipment, such as motors; installs electrical components, equipment, or systems.
Provide assistance during emergencies by operating floodlights or generators, placing flares, or driving needed vehicles.
Maintains records or files, preparing reports, or ordering supplies or equipment;
Orders construction or extraction materials or equipment, as directed;
Provides preliminary sketches or cost estimates for materials or services;
Perform physically demanding tasks, such as digging trenches to lay conduit or moving or lifting heavy objects.
Maintains shop area clean and orderly;
Maintains and upkeeps designated signs;
Performs daily routine preventative maintenance on all vehicles and equipment;
Corrects any unsafe action, improper conduct, rule violation, and takes any necessary action by notifying chain of command of any incident, safety hazard or equipment failure;
Maintains logs, material logs and equipment inventory;
Picks up parts and supplies as directed;
Performs duties of coworkers as necessary to ensure continuity of operations during absences;

Creates a high-quality work culture through participation in and emphasis on training and mentoring to develop leadership, management, and technical skills in self and all employees, including safety related training and skills.

As members of the County of El Paso Emergency Response System, all El Paso County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to train on emergency response and/or perform certain emergency services at the direction of their supervisor.
Summary of Position
The Street Electrician Assistant performs day-to-day in the installation, troubleshooting and maintenance of installation, maintenance, and repairing of electric wiring, equipment and fixtures, and general maintenance duties as assigned. Ensures that work is in accordance with relevant codes in the installation and servicing of streetlights, and electrical control systems. The incumbent provides general maintenance in El Paso County and surroundings areas.

Reports to: Street Technician, Lead
Directs: This is a non-supervisory position.
Other: Has frequent contact with public and other county employees.
