Job Description

An employee in this class is responsible for providing programs and customer support in circulation and reference services. Work generally requires the employee to check materials in and out at the circulation desk and assist patrons with reference methods and resources. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Library Manager.

Illustrative Examples of Work

  • Plan, schedule and perform programs for children of all ages or other programming.

  • Works at the circulation desk checking materials in and out; answers telephones; and provides assistance to patrons.

  • Notifies patrons of overdue books and fines; collects fees and fines.

  • Registers patrons for new or replacement cards.

  • Promote new materials and determine when they rotate off the new shelves.

  • Answers patrons’ questions regarding reference material.

  • Registers patrons for computer usage and assists with computer applications.

  • Assists patrons in finding research materials.

  • Shelves books and maintains shelves for accuracy and neatness.

  • Opens and/or closes the library.

  • Adheres to the department’s safety rules and regulations.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

  • Help plan, market and implement library programming.

  • Collaborate with other organizations when advantageous to the library.

  • May count the library’s nightly deposits.

  • May recruit and coordinate volunteers.

  • May submit estimates and orders for supplies as well as maintain supply inventory.

  • May perform clerical duties.

  • May assist in the review and selection of new materials.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have strong computer and research skills.

  • Some knowledge of library operations, techniques, systems, tools and policies and procedures.

  • Some knowledge of library collection, including books and authors.

  • Some knowledge of age appropriate materials.

  • Some knowledge of resources available for genealogical research.

  • Some knowledge of fines and collection process.

  • Ability to operate computers, automated systems and a variety of equipment.

  • Ability to interpret library rules, procedures and policies.

  • Ability to use library reference materials and develop resourceful search strategies using a variety of media.

  • Ability to provide guidance and direction to the general public and instruct them in locating information to meet their needs.

  • Ability to provide guidance to volunteers in basic library functions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, patrons from a diverse population of people, vendors, other libraries and the general public.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.

  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Must possess close visual acuity.

Education and Experience

  • Graduation with a two-year degree or two years of college and some experience working in a library providing support and assistance to patrons or related experience.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid North Carolina Driver License.
