Responsibilities include but are not limited to performing intermediate, semiskilled maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds, as well as custodial task.  Will perform carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, grounds work, snow removal and general mechanical repairs as needed at the nursing home facility.  Monitors all areas of nursing home, grounds and vehicles for potential safety concerns and reports to supervisor.  Work is performed under direction of the Maintenance Supervisor.

Starting Pay:  $31,898 to $42,265/year - Depending on Experience

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


Monitors building, grounds and vehicles for potential safety concerns.  Maintains and/or repairs areas in need by performing basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting or other necessary mechanical repairs.  Reports unsafe conditions to the Nursing Home Administrator.   

Responds to all maintenance needs as documented in the maintenance logs on each nursing unit and kitchen.   

 

Serves as an on call employee for after-hours maintenance needs of Bedford County Nursing Home as well as Bedford County as scheduled. 

 

Performs grounds maintenance such as cutting trees, shrubs, grass, weeding, etc.  Installs landscaping materials such as rock and mulch. 

 

Performs snow and ice removal from sidewalks, steps, driveway, and parking areas.   

 

Utilizing Bedford County Nursing Home vehicle, transports supplies and equipment as necessary.

 

Provides staff transportation during inclement weather events as needed.    

 

Repairs doors, locks, windows.  Checks security locks and keypads.   

 

Inspects roof for leaks during weather events.  Repairs roof and gutters.  Replaces ceiling tiles as needed.

    

Assists in vehicle maintenance.  Keeps vehicles in clean and proper working order.   

 

Performs preventative and routine maintenance on facility equipment.  Keeps equipment in clean and working order.  Maintains equipment maintenance and inspections reports.   

 

Maintains stock rooms, laundry areas, and maintenance work areas in clean and organized manner.  Secures and maintains documentation of inventory of supplies and other required records.   

 

Assists with monitoring and securing adequate supply of linens, cleaning and custodial supplies.   

 

Routinely updates Maintenance Supervisor on needed repairs and progress toward completion of repairs and assigned tasks.   

 

Removes waste / trash from the facility.   

 

Politely responds to general questions from staff, residents, and families; provides directions or refers individual to the appropriate person for further assistance.    

 

Assists with the preservation and security of facilities by locking doors and windows; notifies supervisor, management or 911 of unusual or suspicious activities. 

 

Participates in employee meetings and trainings as necessary.   

 

Provides coverage and fills in for housekeeping and laundry employees in the event of staff shortages as needed.    

 

Performs special projects as assigned.   

 

Accomplishes all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested by management.   

 

Meets attendance requirements and maintains the highest level of dependability.   

 

Consistently demonstrates ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs, and reprioritizes work as necessary.   

 

Education/Experience:

 

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or general education degree (GED).  Demonstrated experience in building maintenance required.  Two years experience and stable work history preferred.  Former working experience in a long term nursing facility helpful. 

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

 

General knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting methods and techniques; general knowledge of the use of common hand and power tools;  knowledge of necessary safety precautions; thorough knowledge of building cleaning techniques and proper use of cleaning materials; ability to maintain inventory.    

 

Highly organized with ability to multi-task.  Ability to handle a high volume of work and varying assignments with accuracy and attention to detail.  Ability to read and comprehend instructions and correspondence.  Proficiency in English and spelling.  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to read and comprehend county. State, and federal policies, procedures and programs of limited scope and difficulty.       

 

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.  Strong quality and service minded.  Ability to work cooperatively in a diverse team and/or independently.   

 

Certifications & Licenses:

 

Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license, proof of insurance required to drive on county business, and acceptable driving record.  Possession of a pesticide applicators license within one year of hire.

This is heavy work requiring exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word level; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and /or  small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm’s length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities. 

 

Environmental Factors:

 

The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibrations, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils.  The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and infectious agents and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

 

Special/Additional Requirements:

 

Subject to a complete criminal history background search and drug            screening with acceptable results.   

 

Worker may be required to work on weekends, holidays, and overtime to meet the needs of the department. 

 

Worker may be responsible for responding to after-hours emergencies involving County facilities.
