Position Summary
Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on county's vehicles and equipment, including performing engine rebuilds and repairs of hydraulics, electrical, cooling, and fuel systems, drive trains and body work. Performs scheduled maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including tune-ups, oil and filter changes, grease jobs, battery checks, tire and lubrication checks, and other preventative maintenance. Position also requires operating the equipment to test working conditions and to perform service work as assigned. Provides backup to Foreman.
Essential Responsibilities and Functions
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment of this position.
1.Maintain, service and repair County vehicles and equipment, to include heavy construction and other motorized equipment (i.e. trucks, County cars, brush cutters, tractors, chippers, water trucks, dump trucks). Also repair and maintain hand and power tools such as jacks, airlifts, etc.
2.Establish and implement daily equipment checks to evaluate preventative maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment.
3.Diagnose engine and mechanical problems; prepare cost estimates; obtain materials, parts and supplies to perform needed repairs on vehicles and equipment.
4.Perform the full range of repair work from minor replacements to rebuilding engines (i.e. changing belts, replace/charge batteries, replace spark plugs, change oil, replace/clean filters, adjust/make minor repairs to engines; adjust/repair carburetors and related units; replace all worn/defective parts; make repairs to clutches, axles and bearings, and related units.)
5.Repair/maintain vehicle air condition units and cooling systems including radiators, compressors, water pumps, thermostats and belts.
6.Troubleshoot/repair vehicle ignition and electrical systems including wiring, solenoid relays, and alternators.
7.Repair and maintain braking systems including master cylinders, rotors, brake pads and drums.
8.Repair and maintain vehicle fuel system including fuel pumps, fuel filters, fuel lines, and fuel gauges.
9.Perform vehicle alignments, suspension repair, tire repair and balancing.
10.Perform painting, welding and repair work to automotive and vehicle body parts.
11.Maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies/parts needed for preventive vehicle maintenance.
12.Process invoices for suppliers and vendors who provide equipment, supplies and services for operations.
13.Clean shop and maintain tools and equipment in an orderly manner.
14.Maintain all vehicles in satisfactory condition to meet state inspection requirements. Drive vehicles to licensed station for state inspection.
15.Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment and vehicles as needed and appropriate. Tow vehicles when necessary.
16.Operate equipment and vehicle and assist work crews as assigned.
17.Operate a wide variety of diagnostic and repair equipment, tools, and materials; operates varied motorized equipment and vehicles; operates personal computer, telephone, copier and other general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheets, database or other system software.
18.Perform other duties as they are assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•Requires a working knowledge of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance.
•Knowledge of safety and accident prevention procedures; knowledge of practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
•Knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding.
Minimum Qualifications:
•High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one year of experience performing equipment maintenance and repair work; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience to meet job requirements.
•Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including endorsement(s).
•Requires one (1) to three (3) years' experience in vehicle and engine maintenance and repair to include heavy equipment, ABS brakes, HVAC, automotive electrical, front suspension, transmission, gas engines, and diesel engines
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment drug testing, physical fitness testing and criminal background check.
