Core Industries engineers solutions for global customers in cargo handling, shore-based services, and fabrication. They own and operate Theodore Industrial Port, one of the largest privately-held port facilities in the Southeast with docking facilities equipped to handle multiple vessels simultaneously up to Panamax Class.
Role Description
Core Industries is seeking a Staff Accountant to join our accounting team supporting a diversified group of companies operating within our deep-water port and industrial services divisions. This position offers exposure to multiple entities, project-based accounting, and intercompany transactions within a dynamic and growing organization.
The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in accounting principles, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across departments in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
General Accounting & Reporting
- Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for multiple affiliated entities in accordance with GAAP.
- Record and reconcile daily financial transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, journal entries, and bank activity.
- Perform bank and balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and timely resolution of discrepancies.
- Support month-end close processes, including recurring journal entries, accruals, and intercompany eliminations.
Project & Cost Accounting
- Assist in maintaining job cost and project-based accounting records for active port, fabrication, and material-handling projects.
- Collaborate with operations teams to ensure proper coding of expenses, POs, and labor allocations.
- Track and analyze budget-to-actual variances by project, department, or cost center.
Financial Analysis & Management Support
- Prepare and analyze financial and operational reports, including trend analyses, key performance indicators, and variance explanations.
- Provide management with insight into cost efficiencies and margin performance across business units.
- Assist with forecasting and budget updates as needed.
Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure compliance with internal controls, company policies, and accounting procedures.
- Maintain organized and auditable records of financial transactions and supporting documentation.
- Assist with annual audits, insurance schedules, and vendor documentation as required.
Collaboration & Systems
- Work closely with accounting leadership and operations to support process improvements and system automation initiatives.
- Utilize Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Jet Reports, and Excel for daily reporting and analysis.
- Participate in cross-functional projects and special assignments as directed by management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
- 0–3 years of accounting experience (public or private sector; internship experience considered).
- Working knowledge of GAAP and standard accounting practices.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, and basic formulas); experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Jet Reports, or other ERP systems preferred.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical mindset, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines within a team-oriented environment.
- Self-motivated with a continuous improvement mindset.
