This role ensures vessel operations comply with all regulatory requirements while optimizing performance, maintenance, and repair schedules. The Port Engineer will work closely with vessel crew, company leadership, and regulatory bodies to maintain the vessel's operational readiness.
Port Engineer Responsibilities
- Oversee engineering management of assigned vessels, including operation, maintenance, repair, condition, and certification.
- Plan and manage voyage repairs, drydockings, and scheduled maintenance periods, including material and service procurement.
- Ensure vessels comply with U.S. Coast Guard, ABS, and company standards, coordinating necessary inspections.
- Prepare annual budgets for spare parts, voyage repairs, major repairs, and special expenditures, ensuring fiscal responsibility.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of the operational status, hull condition, and onboard equipment of assigned vessels.
- Provide technical support and guidance to vessel engineers and senior officers to ensure efficient operations.
- Monitor engineering performance, recommend improvements, and implement modifications when necessary.
- Review vessel maintenance reports to ensure adherence to safety and maintenance standards.
- Represent the company in industry technical forums as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Fleet Engineer.
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering from an accredited maritime academy or equivalent education.
- US Coast Guard unlimited license as First Assistant Engineer or higher for diesel-propelled vessels.
- Minimum 5 years of experience sailing aboard inland river or oceangoing commercial vessels, with First Assistant or Chief Engineer experience preferred.
- At least 3 years of experience in vessel operations, maintenance, or repair; prior Port Engineer experience or drydocking/project management a plus.
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard and ABS regulations.
- Familiarity with ABS NS5 Planned Maintenance software and the Inland Waterways is a plus.
- Valid TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card) issued by TSA.
- Ability to travel as needed and pass a physical exam, including entering confined spaces and climbing ladders aboard vessels.
