Mate Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mate to join our team. As the second-in-command of the tug and barge, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe operation of the vessel, overseeing the maintenance and cleanliness of the vessel, and instructing Deckhands in seamanship skills. You will also be required to stand watch, make and break tow with barges, handle lines and wires, and perform various other duties as assigned.

As the second-in-command of the tug and barge, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe operation of the vessel, overseeing the maintenance and cleanliness of the vessel, and instructing Deckhands in seamanship skills. You will also be required to stand watch, make and break tow with barges, handle lines and wires, and perform various other duties as assigned.
Mate Responsibilities
- Stand watch in the wheelhouse, alternating with the Captain
- Oversee the safety of the vessel, including inspections of installed equipment
- Maintain chart and publication corrections
- Instruct Deckhands in seamanship skills
- Assist the Captain in barge landings, communicating distances and directions accurately and concisely
- Determine the need for and assign lookouts as necessary
- Inspect the vessel for cleanliness
- Inventory supplies and order as appropriate
- Monitor onboard usage to ensure supplies are utilized efficiently
- Perform various maintenance and repair tasks
- Train assigned workers
- Evaluate subordinates fairly
- Understand and use information in cargo information cards and material safety data sheets
- Instruct Deckhands on the use of all tools and machinery onboard the vessel
- Provide first aid and CPR as needed
- Complete 24-hour HAZWOPER training within 90 days of hire
- Operate pike poles, heavy lines, winches, and mechanical tools for repairs
- Perform various other tasks as assigned by the Captain
- Minimum 200 Ton Mate Oceans USCG license with towing endorsement
- Radar observer endorsement required
- Must have Coast Guard approved firefighting training
- Valid First aid/CPR certificates
- Complete 24-hour HAZWOPER training within 90 days of hire
- Valid state driver’s license
- Ability to work in a variety of schedules and hours
- Ability to live in confined spaces and get along with crew members for extended periods of time
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, carrying, and bending
- Ability to work in all weather conditions, including heavy seas and extreme temperatures
- Ability to work at heights and operate pike poles, heavy lines, and winches
