What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electrical Design Engineer position at Coordinated Designs & Controls?
Electrical Design Engineer – Metal Clad Switchgear
Coordinated Designs & Controls, an affiliate of Electro-Mechanical LLC, is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to join our Metal Clad Switchgear Division in Houston, TX. In this role, you will be responsible for developing electrical designs, schematics, drawings, and bills of material that support our power distribution products. You will work closely with senior engineers, designers, and cross-functional teams to translate concepts, specifications, and customer requirements into accurate, manufacturable electrical designs.
This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on electrical engineer who is strong in power and control schematics, comfortable working in a small OEM environment, and motivated to take ownership of day-to-day design work. The right candidate will be detail-oriented, technically curious, and capable of growing into a key technical resource for the organization while supporting high-quality, American-made electrical equipment.
How You Will Make an Impact
- Design and develop electrical power and control schematics for metal-clad switchgear, low-voltage switchgear, low-voltage motor control centers (MCCs), and medium-voltage motor control equipment.
- Produce accurate electrical drawings and layouts using AutoCAD based on engineering input, specifications, and standard design practices.
- Work closely with drafting resources to develop, review, and finalize drawings and bills of material (BOMs).
- Review customer orders, RFQs, and project documentation to ensure design requirements are fully understood.
- Participate in RFQ, quote, and order reviews, providing application-level engineering support to sales and project teams as needed (this is not a sales role).
- Serve as a technical resource for internal teams and, when required, assist with customer discussions related to design scope and technical details.
- Review approval drawings prior to customer release and manufacturing drawings and BOMs prior to shop release.
- Verify that all design output complies with applicable codes, standards, and internal engineering guidelines (ANSI, UL, NEC, NEMA, IEEE, MSHA, and applicable local codes).
- Collaborate daily with Project Engineers, manufacturing, quality, and regulatory teams to resolve design issues and support production needs.
- Enhance manufacturing efficiency by developing designs that support safe, repeatable, and consistent assembly processes.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of design standards, templates, and best practices.
- Participate in cost-reduction, design improvement, standardization, and documentation improvement initiatives.
- Manage assigned engineering tasks and projects to meet schedule commitments and deliverables.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while adhering to all company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
- Adjust working hours as needed to support production schedules or project timelines.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in power distribution equipment design.
- At least 5 years of electrical design experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or OEM environment.
- Hands-on experience developing power and control schematics for electrical equipment.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong ability to read, interpret, and produce accurate electrical drawings with close attention to detail.
- Experience coordinating with designers or drafters to complete drawing packages and BOMs.
- Solid problem-solving skills and the ability to self-check work for accuracy and completeness.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, manufacturing, and commercial teams.
- Ability to work independently in a small-team environment with limited structure and supervision.
- Adjust working hours as needed to support project and business requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with metal-clad switchgear, low-voltage switchgear, low-voltage MCCs, and medium-voltage motor control systems.
- Application engineering experience supporting sales teams, RFQs, or customer technical inquiries.
- Familiarity with UL, IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NEMA standards applicable to power distribution equipment.
- Prior experience working for an OEM or manufacturer of switchgear or motor control products.
Additional Responsibilities
- Maintain a working understanding of the MCBA MRP system (or willingness to learn).
- Stay current with ISO procedures, work instructions, forms, and corporate standards.
- Keep up with relevant technological developments in electrical design and power distribution equipment.
