General Functions:
The Cultural Events Manager oversees the planning, coordination, and execution of cultural activities and events across CITC departments, with specialized focus on Native Youth Olympics and cultural programming for Alaska Native and American Indian participants. This position supervises NYO Officials and assigned Cultural Staff while managing event logistics, budgets, timelines, and stakeholder coordination to ensure successful delivery of culturally responsive programming. Working in partnership with our people, the Cultural Events Manager helps develop opportunities that fulfill our endless potential by preserving cultural traditions, fostering community connections, and providing meaningful cultural experiences. The role requires strong leadership abilities, cultural competency, and expertise in event management to support CITC's mission and values through high-quality cultural programming.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute cultural, educational, and community events from concept to completion, including Native Youth Olympics, heritage celebrations, exhibits, and performances.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate NYO Officials and assigned Cultural Staff to ensure effective team performance and service delivery.
  • Develop comprehensive event timelines, budgets, logistics plans, promotional strategies, and evaluation mechanisms while ensuring all deadlines and requirements are met.
  • Collaborate with leadership and departments to establish event priorities and support organizational programming needs.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, vendors, artists, performers, speakers, and volunteers to ensure seamless event execution.
  • Secure necessary permits, insurance, venues, equipment, and resources as required for event operations.
  • Facilitate contracts in accordance with CITC Contract Policy and maintain accurate documentation for all vendor and consultant relationships.
  • Maintain and update participant databases and online registration systems for NYO and relevant cultural activities.
  • Provide leadership within the CITC Activities Committee to ensure successful execution of organizational events.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive lists of Cultural Bearers, dance groups, artists, and performers for CITC programming and events.
  • Coordinate and track CITC's presence at community events to ensure proper organizational representation.
  • Prepare monthly reports and end-of-quarter/season reports documenting event outcomes, participation, and programmatic impact.
  • Coordinate with the Communications Department to promote events and highlight cultural programming achievements.
  • Maintain current knowledge of organizational programs and services to effectively support departmental cultural event needs.
  • Perform all related duties as assigned.
Job Specifications:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Alaska Native and American Indian culture, traditions, and community resources.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to provide clear instructions to groups of various sizes.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple activities and prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent data management skills with ability to work across multiple platforms including Excel, Access, and other database systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to make sound decisions and exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate across departments.
  • Ability to work under pressure, independently, and with minimal supervision while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), Adobe Acrobat, and Smartsheets database.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion of satisfactory state and federal fingerprint criminal background check.
  • Bachelor's degree in Event Management, Hospitality Management, Marketing, Communication, Organizational Development, or related field. Relevant experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experience working with Alaska Native people with knowledge of their values and belief systems and ability to provide culturally competent services.
  • Valid Alaska driver's license and insurable under CITC's automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver's license for at least three years.

Manager

  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in event planning, administrative logistics, and activity coordination.
  • Three (3) years of supervisory and demonstrated leadership experience.

Sr. Manager

  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in event planning, administrative logistics, and activity coordination.
  • Four (4) years of supervisory and demonstrated leadership experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Event Management, Hospitality Management, Marketing, Communication, Organizational Development, or related field.
  • Certification in Event Planning or Project Management (e.g., CMP, PMP).
  • Experience with Native Youth Olympics or traditional Alaska Native cultural programming.
  • Experience managing large-scale cultural events and community celebrations.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • May require prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and consistently working on a computer with repetitive motion.
  • May require prolonged periods of standing/walking during events.
  • The need to occasionally move around the office to access filing cabinets, storage cabinets, and office equipment may be necessary.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner.
