General Functions:
The Kitchen Assistant provides support and assistance to the Kitchen Supervisor to ensure food service is delivered and the kitchen is maintained to the highest quality standards. This position plays a vital role in supporting the nutritional well-being of children and families served by Clare Swan Early Learning Center through safe and compliant food preparation and service. Working in partnership with our people, the Kitchen Assistant develops opportunities that fulfill our endless potential by ensuring Alaska Native and American Indian children receive nutritious meals in a culturally responsive environment. The role requires adherence to all food safety regulations and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist with meal preparation which includes washing fruits and vegetables, peeling, chopping, cooking, and baking.
  • Deliver food to classrooms and designated areas in a timely and safe manner.
  • Comply with all Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) requirements and food service-related Municipality of Anchorage Health & Safety regulations.
  • Maintain clean, sanitary, safe, and well-organized kitchen and food storage environment.
  • Sweep, mop, wash, and sanitize floors, surfaces, cooking and eating utensils, and dishware.
  • Follow the First In/First Out food safety program to ensure proper food rotation and freshness.
  • Assist administrative staff in gathering data for relevant reports and claims.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with classrooms, including being present and available, to enhance students' understanding and connection with the food service program.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform all related duties as needed and assigned.
Job Specifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to use kitchen equipment and appliances with strong understanding of standard kitchen measurements.
  • Ability to work as an active participant in a team environment and develop rapport with parents, children, and co-workers.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple activities simultaneously with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with ability to follow an established work schedule.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high quality standards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian community.
Minimum Core Competencies:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion of satisfactory state and federal fingerprint criminal background check.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Municipality of Anchorage Food Worker Card or obtain within one (1) month of hire.
  • Must provide copy of current Health Report.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two (2) years' experience working in a commercial, school, Head Start, or similar kitchen environment.
  • Current or former Head Start parents are encouraged to apply.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Frequently be physically active without getting tired, including active play and activities.
  • The ability to be on your feet for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently, by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner.
  • Able to get up and down off the floor with ease, including kneeling, bending, squatting.
  • The ability to wear the appropriate PPE.
  • Frequently exposed to bodily fluids.
  • Possible exposure to noise, and contaminants such as cleaning solvents.
  • Routinely exposed to outdoor conditions including inclement weather.
