This job posting is hiring for two roles: one (1) full-time position (40 hours per week) and one (1) as-needed (PRN) position (3-10 hours per week). Both roles are non-exempt (hourly).

General Functions:
The Fab Lab Instructor I/II/III is responsible for learning and teaching the software, material, and equipment used in the Fab Lab. This position develops and implements culturally infused Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)-enrichment modules in select schools and/or on-site in the Fab Lab, plans and implements school break camp sessions, program implementation, and community STEM events. Working in partnership with our people, the Fab Lab Instructor helps develop opportunities that fulfill our endless potential by creating engaging fabrication-based learning experiences for Alaska Native and American Indian youth. The role requires strong technical proficiency, mentorship abilities, and dedication to advancing STEM education through hands-on digital fabrication.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:

Fab Lab Instructor I

  • Serve as a mentor to participants and volunteers.
  • Implement culturally infused fabrication-based STEM-enrichment modules to classrooms/programs.
  • Provide in-school, extended day, camp-based instruction to youth.
  • Act as classroom support and assist school-based activities as needed.
  • Provide leadership to participants by making referrals to educational resources, establishing rapport with in-school staff and other educational agencies, CITC programs, and social services within the Alaska Native community.
  • Participate in training.
  • Conduct Fab Lab tours.
  • Collect and enter data and information on participants and programming.
  • Engage and monitor youth whenever they are present in the Fab Lab including projects, camp sessions, and school break sessions.
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed by all participants during in-school, extended day, and camp activities, including activities conducted on the CITC campus, during the transportation of youth to outside events and camps, and activities held offsite.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Transport students, as needed, to class sites, on field trips, cultural/STEM camps, or other locations within the State of Alaska.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Fab Lab Instructor II

  • Perform all duties and responsibilities of Fab Lab Instructor I with a high level of proficiency and responsibility.
  • Develop and document culturally infused, STEM-enrichment education modules (project-based Instructables).
  • Plan and facilitate STEM-enrichment camps and community STEM-events in coordination with others or individually.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with potential community partners.
  • Prepare reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing data and information.

Fab Lab Instructor III

  • Perform all duties and responsibilities of Fab Lab Instructor I and II with an advanced level of proficiency and responsibility.
  • Act as a resource, mentor, and trainer for all Fab Lab Instructors.
  • Provide high-quality, hands-on training and engagements to guest interns, partners, and stakeholders in Fab Lab programs, while fostering strong, collaborative relationships and a welcoming environment.
  • Train on how to implement culturally infused STEM modules.
  • Collaborate with the Equipment and Training Coordinator to provide training and education to other employees as needed, answering questions according to standard procedures and best practices.
  • Make meaningful improvements to services, programs and processes, and organizational effectiveness that add value for participants and employees in the Fab Lab.
  • Collaborate with the Outreach Team to bridge the Fab Lab and YE Department with partnership opportunities.
Job Specifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct on software and equipment with proficiency in utilizing CITC Fab Lab equipment, tools, program software, safety rules, and project plans.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Fab Lab operations and CITC personnel policies.
  • Ability to manage groups and facilitate engagement with large groups of participants.
  • Ability to work independently and as contributory team member in positive, productive manner while using sound judgment when interacting with staff and participants of various ages and backgrounds in non-judgmental manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, staff, youth participants, parents, and the general public.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form while managing time and tasks effectively.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native/American Indian community.
  • Ability to travel to schools within the Anchorage School District and across the state of Alaska.
Minimum Core Competencies:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion of satisfactory state and federal fingerprint criminal background check.
  • Valid Alaska driver's license and insurable under CITC's automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver's license for at least three years.

Fab Lab Instructor I

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with youth.
  • Minimum of 2 years performing STEM-related activities, providing instruction or similar experience.
  • Basic knowledge of tools and equipment.
  • One (1) year experience working with Alaska Native families and knowledge of their values and belief systems.

Fab Lab Instructor II

  • Associate degree in education, STEM-related field, the arts, or related field. Relevant work experience may substitute for education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with youth.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience working with a variety of design software.
  • Proficient knowledge or experience with some Fab Equipment or tools.
  • Two (2) years experience working with Alaska Native families and knowledge of their values and belief systems.

Fab Lab Instructor III

  • Bachelor's degree in education, STEM-related field, the arts, or related field. Relevant work experience may substitute for education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with a variety of design software.
  • Minimum four (4) years experience working with youth.
  • Three (3) years experience working with Alaska Native families and knowledge of their values and belief systems.
  • Proficient in all Fab equipment and tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Teaching certification or credentials.
  • Cultural knowledge of Alaska Native/American Indian culture.
  • Experience working in a school setting and familiarity with developing and implementing activity plans for youth or students.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Good manual dexterity.
  • Standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently, by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner.
  • The ability to wear the appropriate PPE.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching, kneeling, crouching, crawling.
  • A good sense of spatial awareness.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, vibration, dust, noise level.
  • Must be able to handle heavy materials and tools.
