Job Summary
The Director of Medical Toxicology (Director) is responsible for clinical operations of all Medical Toxicology activities for Cook County Health (CCH) including the Medical Toxicology clinical operations in the Department of Emergency Medicine. The Director will manage and supervise the clinical and administrative staff in the Division of Toxicology, under the direction of and reporting to the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. This Director will manage critical relationships with our clinical partners in the Toxikon Consortium and the Illinois Poison Center as well as assuring the clinical training of fellows, residents, and medical students in the Division of Toxicology. The Director provides leadership and management for the department and works cooperatively and supportively with members of the Emergency Department and hospital medical staff for both John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital and Provident Hospital for Cook County Health (CCH).
Typical Duties
Divisional Duties
General
- Provides leadership, planning, organization, staffing, coordination, and evaluation for Division of Medical Toxicology clinical activities.
- Provides yearly feedback and evaluations of administrative and clinical staff in the Division of Toxicology.
- Responsible for the ethical practice of emergency medicine within the department.
- Ensures collaborative effort in patient care between Toxicology service and hospital medical staff.
- Acts as liaison for Toxicology to both hospital administration and the medical staff.
- Ensures adequate daily scheduling of on call Toxicology consultants to provide back support for inpatient consultation service, and medical back-up service for the Illinois Poison Center.
- Collaborates with Department Chair on hospital and hospital department issues involving patient experience, patient safety, and any regulatory inquiries.
Administrative/Operations
Provides supervisory role to clinical and administrative support in the Division of Toxicology. Facilitated by daily interaction and scheduled weekly meetings to review the following:
o Oversees the running of the bedside clinical service including the daily review and feedback to inpatient services.
o Ensures all service consultations are seen and staffed in a timely manner.
o Ensures reliability of consulting services 24 hours a day.
o Provides 24-hour back-up medical back-up coverage to the Illinois Poison Center.
o Ensures updated contact list and on-call references for Toxicology consultations.
o Distributing call schedules for Toxicology in a timely manner to on call scheduling applications.
o Write, maintain, and review all policies and procedures pertinent to the Medical Toxicology service.
o Respond to any patient, administrative or regulatory inquiries regarding Toxicology services.
o Provide yearly feedback about Toxicology clinical and administrative staff to the Department Chair in preparation for yearly evaluations.
o Reviews patient complaints and requests from the billing department concerning Toxicology services.
- Provides supervisory role to all the educational activities in the Division of Toxicology. This includes the educational structure for Toxicology fellows; Cook County Emergency Medicine and external rotating residents; and rotating medical students. Specific educational duties include:
o Engages in all teaching and educational activities in the division.
o Oversees the Toxicology Fellows educational support and provide support to the Program Director to facilitate and conduct the Toxicology curriculum.
o Assumes the duties of the program director including the recruitment; onboarding; and daily support of the Toxicology fellowship, in absence of a program director the Director would. In addition, provide direct oversight for the clinical work provided by the Medical Toxicology Fellows.
o Ensures Toxicology fellowship is complaint with all ACGME guidelines.
o Assists program director with recruitment, interviews, and ranking of Toxicology fellow candidates.
o Facilitates all research projects and initiatives for Toxicology division with a specific focus on Toxicology fellows.
o Acts as liaison to Emergency Department Research Division and IRB for any inquiries into current research projects.
o Oversees the monthly curriculum and scheduling of medical student, internal and external resident rotations including didactics; conferences; and completion of end of rotation evaluations.
o Serves as liaison to the Toxikon Consortium. The Toxikon Consortium is the functional management consortium that pools the major resources of Medical Toxicology in Chicago. The current members include Cook County Health and Hospitals System, University of Illinois, and the Illinois Poison Center at Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council.
o Serves as a director of the Toxikon Consortium or collaborates directly with the director of the Consortium to conduct citywide and regional functions.
- o Assists and coordinates all administrative functions of the consortium.
- o Reviews requests to hire, postings, and disciplinary actions.
Provides direct support to Emergency Department Chair
o Attends monthly Division Director meetings to update chair and division directors of any recent updates’/initiatives/policies.
o Collaborates with chair on department and hospital wide policies.
o Reviews current staffing of division and participates in interviews/cv review for any new Attending applicant to the Toxicology Division.
o Assists in requests, policy clarifications, and committees as directed by hospital administration.
o Assists with annual budget requests for Division of Toxicology.
o Provides feedback to the department on Toxicology Attendings for annual review.
Clinical Duties
- Functions as an Emergency Medicine Attending physician performing all duties as outlined by the Department of Emergency Medicine.
- Sees patients who present for care in the Emergency Department.
- Provides appropriate supervision to ensure quality patient care by staff, physician assistants and students in the ED. Provides overall supervision of all the cases seen in the area.
- Provides appropriate medical care, discharge planning, decisions regarding admission of patients to various services, laboratory and x-ray procedures are ordered, and ensures overall quality of patient care in the area.
- Promptly completes charts and follows the appropriate procedures for patient billing.
- Ensures efficient flow of patients through the Emergency Department, laboratory and x-ray studies are retrieved in a timely fashion and decisions made to discharge or admit patients as rapidly as possible, while ensuring patient quality is maintained.
- Follows and enforces policies and protocols in the department.
- Serves as a role model for all house staff/students and students for the appropriate manner of providing patient care, contact with the family, and contact with ancillary personnel including nursing staff and staff from other services.
- Provides leadership in the department while on duty and resolves administrative issues according to established policies and procedures.
- Responds to requests from nurses and other emergency department personnel for patient evaluations and decisions regarding care.
- Attends faculty meetings and departmental conferences as directed by the Department Chair
- Lectures to the residents and medical students
- Participates in research projects and scholarly activities.
- Maintains an active clinical load of at least 70%.
- Reports to the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited college or university
Licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment
Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment
Completion of an American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) or American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM) approved Emergency Medicine Residency Program
Board Certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) or American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM)
Board certified in Medical Toxicology by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM)
Five (5) years of work experience as an Attending Physician in the practice of Emergency Medicine with at least three (3) years of this experience in academic Medical Toxicology
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
Thorough knowledge of Emergency Medicine principles, practices, and procedures.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to ensure the protection of the confidentiality and security of healthcare information for all patients.
Knowledge of the principles and methods of training medical staff to ensure standards of care meet or exceed expectations.
Excellent interpersonal, patient relations, verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups.
Excellent leadership skills.
Ability to prioritize, plan, and organize projects and tasks.
Ability to adhere to department policies and standards utilizing best practices.

Physical and Environmental Demands
This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements.
