The Associate Medical Officer is responsible for supporting the Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Residency Program Director in the administration and oversight of an accredited residency program in preventive medicine for the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH). This role combines educational leadership, program management, mentorship, and clinical practice to train the next generation of preventive medicine physicians. Ensures compliance with accreditation standards, fosters innovation in training, and integrates the program with institutional and public health priorities.

Assists the Program Director working as part of an interdisciplinary team to provide select personal and broad population health services to the residents of Cook County.

Typical Duties

    • Assists the Residency Program Director with administration and oversight of the CCDPH Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Residency Program and serves as an Associate Medical Officer for select CCDPH programs and units.
    • Support the monitoring and interpreting multiple and complex population health status indicators and proposes evidence informed policies and practices to advance health equity and improve well-being; including providing medical leadership to programs and divisions of the department as well as medical consultation to suburban Cook County providers, as needed. Supports the Program Director in oversight of the day-to-day operations of the residency program, ensuring compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements.
    • Assists the Program Director with recruitment, interviewing, and selection of residents while maintaining a diverse and inclusive candidate pool.
    • Mentors residents in research, clinical practice, and public health initiatives.
    • Assists the Program Director in developing policies and procedures to ensure accreditation compliance and partners with the Cook County Health (CCH) Department of Graduate Medical Education around best practices and quality assurance.
    • Collaborates with national organizations such as the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) to share best practices and resources.
    • Assists the Program Director with the design and implementation of a comprehensive curriculum covering public health, preventive medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics, health systems management, and clinical preventive services.
    • Assists the Program Director with leading weekly seminars and preparing residents for the American Board of Preventive Medicine certification exam.
    • Identifies clinical and practicum placements both within the institution and externally.
    • Provides expertise in addressing pressing public health issues such as vaccine equity, chronic disease prevention, healthcare system transformation, health literacy and climate resiliency.
    • Serves as an attending physician, clinical decision maker, and consultant to clinicians and ancillary personnel in the environmental health, communicable diseases, public health emergencies, health promotion and prevention, and other public health areas of the Department.
    • Provides direct clinical care of at least 10%, as assigned.

    • Participates in community-facing public health roles, including serving as a physician in public health clinics or on-call programs.
    • Works in a multidisciplinary team with mid-level providers, public health nurses, environmental sanitarians, health promotion staff, epidemiologists, and other public health staff to coordinate and provide necessary clinical input and expert participation in core public health functions.
    • Monitors and interprets multiple and complex population health status indicators and proposes evidence informed policies and practices to improve and promote health and well-being.
    • Works in a team and with partners to advance the field of public health by adopting evidence informed policies and programs to improve the health and eliminate health inequities in Cook County.
    • Provides medical consultation and guidance to hospitals, the private medical community, schools, and others in the community regarding environmental and communicable disease control and prevention procedures and methods.
    • Communicates sensitive and high stakes health information to educate health professionals, communities and other organizations through a variety of media platforms.
    • Participates in on-call response to public health inquiries and emergencies, including outbreaks.
    • Represents CCDPH at appropriate medical meetings, and on public health and other committees as assigned.
    • Assists in the development, review, and revision of policies, procedures and protocols for all units of CCDPH.
    • Reports to the Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Residency Program Director and Medical Officer
    • Performs other duties as assigned


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited college or university
    • Must be Licensed as a Physician in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment
    • Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment
    • Board certification in Preventive Medicine or Occupational Medicine or Board Eligible in Preventative Medicine or Occupational Medicine and must obtain Board Certification within one (1) year of starting employment
    • Two (2) years of experience in public health areas such as epidemiology, chronic disease prevention, healthcare policy, and/or environmental

Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in the practice of public health
    • Experience in supervision and/or management of staff
    • Experience in public health topics such as epidemiology, chronic disease prevention, healthcare policy, or environmental health
    • Experience securing funding through grants for innovative training programs or research initiatives
    • Strong communication skills for teaching, mentoring, and engaging with diverse audiences
