Job Summary
The Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program Director (Program Director) works with the Chair of the Department of Radiology in the overall supervision and organization of the residency program to help insure the continued provision of quality training and supervision to the Diagnostic Radiology Residents and quality imaging and interventions for the patients in Cook County Health. These leadership duties are in addition to the standard clinical attending responsibilities. The Program Director assists the Chair in assessing staffing, recruitment of Attending Physician staff, scheduling, quality assurance and other administrative tasks as determined by the Chair. The Program Director will act as Department Chair when the Chair or Associate Chair are not available.
General Administrative Responsibilities
Collective Bargaining
- Review applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements and consult with Labor Relations to generate management proposals
- Participate in collective bargaining negotiations, caucus discussions and working meetings
Discipline
- Document, recommend and effectuate discipline at all levels
- Work closely with labor relations and/or labor counsel to effectuate and enforce applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements
- Initiate, authorize and complete disciplinary action pursuant to CCH system rules, policies, procedures and provision of applicable collective bargaining agreements
Supervision
- Direct and effectuate CCH management policies and practices
- Access and proficiently navigate CCH records system to obtain and review information necessary to execute provisions of applicable collective bargaining agreements
Management
- Contribute to the management of CCH staff and CCH’ systemic development and success
- Discuss and develop CCH system policies and procedures
- Consistently use independent judgment to identify operational staffing issues and needs and perform the following functions as necessary; hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, direct or discipline employees pursuant to applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements
- Work with Labor Relations to discern past practice when necessary
Typical Duties
- Follows departmental and hospital policies
- Interprets radiologic studies in a timely manner
- Reviews dictation of final reports for studies reviewed in a timely manner
- Supervises Radiology residents, Attending Radiologists and technologist when appropriate
- Reviews Radiology residents preliminary reports in a timely manner; reviews and corrects Radiology residents preliminary reports, as necessary
- Participates in the education of residents, including didactic lecture preparation
- Provides radiologic consultative services for other clinical departments within Cook County Health (CCH)
- Participates in multidisciplinary conferences as assigned
- Performs procedures in areas where clinical privileges are granted
- Provides coverage to the various areas of the department and hospital system as requested by the Chairman including traveling to different sites if necessary
- Participates in departmental and/or system wide committees as assigned
- Participates in departmental and/or system wide quality improvements/assurance efforts as assigned
- Maintains an educational environment conducive to educating the residents
- Takes calls as assigned by the department chair including remote review of studies
- Oversees all aspects of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program. Follows and maintains all program requirements set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for graduate medical education in Diagnostic Radiology.
- Works cooperatively with the Attending Physician staff to continually evaluate, develop and refine the residency curriculum.
- Oversees and ensures the quality of didactic and clinical education in all participating areas for the program.
- Oversee and assists in maintaining continued residency accreditation.
- Oversees the recruitment and matching of new residents into the program.
- Monitors resident supervision at all participating areas.
- Evaluates competency of residents prior to performing independent on-call activities.
- Participates in the hiring and continued evaluation of the physician staffing within the Department of Radiology and CCH.
- Must maintain a clinical load of at least 60%.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited college or university
- Successful completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) accredited Diagnostic Radiology Residency
- Licensed as a physician and surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment
- Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment
- Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology (Must maintain full board certification to remain on medical staff)
- Completion of an Imaging Fellowship (Body, Musculoskeletal, Neuroradiology, MRI or similar) in the United States
- Two (2) years of experience as an Attending Radiologist
- One (1) year of providing educational leadership experience
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of administrative experience
- Research activity within the last year
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Working knowledge and experience with all aspects of general Radiology
- Working knowledge and experience with interpretation of body imaging examinations
- Knowledge of the principles and methods of training medical staff to ensure standards of care
- Skill to analyze data/information accurately in order to determine and implement an effective and appropriate course of action
- Skill to prepare written documents to provide information and/or direction to staff and others.
- Skill to communicate effectively in order to exchange and/or provide information and/or direction to staff and others
- Demonstrate the ability to follow department specific work rules, hospital and personnel rules.
- Demonstrate attention to detail, accuracy and precision in decision making.
- Ability to adhere to department policies and standards utilizing best practices and the appropriate us of the electronic health record (EHR)
- Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when challenged.
- Ability to follow hospital protocol when exposed to noise, chemicals, disease, blood borne pathogens, patient violence and procedural injuries
- Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, evenings and holidays as needed.
- Must be able to travel to work sites throughout Cook County
- Ability to meet department and divisional productivity thresholds
- Ability to meet appropriate confidentiality standards for protected health information (PHI)
- Ability to provide appropriate patient care while maintaining fiduciary responsibility to patients
- Ability to demonstrate service to public health or underserved populations
Physical and Environmental Demands
This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
