Position Overview
As a Sheet Metal Installer II, you'll take on more independent responsibility for fabricating, assembling, installing, and repairing sheet metal ductwork and HVAC components on commercial projects, applying in-depth knowledge of dry-side systems to deliver precise, code-compliant work with minimal supervision. Work closely with senior installers and foremen to contribute to efficient, high-quality installations that support safer, more sustainable commercial facilities nationwide. Duties and Responsibilities
- Fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal ductwork, fittings, dampers, and accessories per blueprints, specifications, and SMACNA standards.
- Perform layout, cutting, bending, seaming, and sealing of ductwork using hand and power tools with increasing independence.
- Assist in coordinating with other trades, reading and interpreting drawings, and ensuring proper system integration.
- Conduct quality checks, minor troubleshooting, and adjustments to ensure airtightness, airflow, and compliance.
- Document work performed, material usage, and progress through accurate paperwork, photos, and logs.
- Participate in daily safety briefings, job hazard analyses, toolbox talks, and maintain strict adherence to safety protocols and PPE requirements.
- Mentor entry-level installers (Level I) and actively pursue personal growth in dry-side HVAC applications, codes, and best practices.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Experience: 3–5 years in commercial sheet metal/HVAC installation and fabrication; demonstrated in-depth knowledge of dry-side applications and design.
- Education: High school diploma or GED required; trade school, apprenticeship completion, or relevant certifications (e.g., SMACNA-related) preferred.
- Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use hand/power tools for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, and manual dexterity required.
- Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial construction settings (indoor/outdoor, varying weather conditions, active job sites); exposure to noise, dust, heights, sharp materials, and mechanical hazards; must strictly adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, and steel-toed boots at all times—safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position. Occasional regional travel within assigned market or on-call rotations may be required as business needs dictate.
Required Skills
- Proficient use of sheet metal tools (shears, snips, brakes, seamers, drills, plasma cutters).
- Blueprint reading, layout, and interpretation of ductwork drawings and specs.
- Duct sealing, hanging, and airflow balancing basics.
- Safety awareness (OSHA 10/30-hour preferred), teamwork, and effective communication with crew, foremen, and customers.
- Basic documentation and reporting; willingness to learn advanced dry-side HVAC concepts.
