BRIDGE CARPENTER Local Candidates / No perdiem for this projectINTRODUCTIONThis classification performs duties associated with bridge construction and maintenance; operateand perform routine maintenance on bridge equipment; perform manual tasks.EXAMPLES OF PRINCIPAL DUTIES(Duties assigned to this classification include, but are not limited to, the following examples. Any oneposition may not perform all listed tasks.)1. Build forms for concrete abutments, piers, decks and slabs; assist in pouring, vibrating andfinishing concrete.2. Cut, bend and place metal reinforcement.3. Build a wide variety of items utilizing finish to rough carpentry skills, such as: office workstationsand related furniture to storage sheds, buildings.4. Operate medium to heavy sized equipment, such as: boom truck, flat bed truck, compressor andrelated bridge equipment. May, on an infrequent basis, operate other road maintenance equipment.Load and safely transport equipment and materials. Perform pre-trip inspections.5. Perform repair on assigned equipment; includes minor maintenance and servicing, etc.6.YOU MUST be able to pass a drug and background check.7. YOU MUST be able to get badged in at the MCO Airport.8. Foreman needed as well!!!!!KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITIONKnowledge of: Considerable knowledge of equipment, materials, practices and procedures used inmaintenance and construction of wooden, steel and concrete bridges; considerable knowledge offinish to rough carpentry; considerable knowledge of minor repair of equipment; thorough knowledgeof safety procedures; reasonable knowledge of the traffic laws and safety rules governing operationsof motor vehicles and equipment on public roads. Skill in: Performing specialized work; performingmaintenance on equipment; safe operation of vehicles, equipment and tools used in area ofresponsibility; safe operation of equipment under adverse conditions. Ability to: Communicateeffectively in both oral and written forms; ability to work from plans, specifications and re-enforcingsteel details; estimate time and materials and manage time efficiently; make decisions independentlyin accordance with established policies and use initiative and judgment in carrying out tasks andresponsibilities; utilize problem identification and resolution techniques; remain calm and use goodjudgment during confrontational or high pressure situations; courteously meet and deal effectivelywith other employees, contractors, vendors and the public.Education, experience and training: Two years experience in bridge maintenance andconstruction or operation heavy road maintenance equipment OR a satisfactory equivalentcombination of experience and training. You must possess valid rough terrain forklift certificationHarness and Fall protection usage certified. Can read and understand basic blue prints.SUPERVISORY CONTROLS OF THIS POSITIONThis classification works with supervision from an operations and maintenance leadworker orsupervisor. Recurring routine assignments are independently performed by employee on basis ofpast experience. Employees estimates time and materials and manages time efficiently. Employeeuses initiative and judgment in completing routine assignments and interpretation of generaladministrative or operational policies and procedures is sometimes necessary. Significant deviationsrequire prior approval. Work is checked at completion of projects. Employees may or may not workin proximity of supervisor.GUIDELINESWork is performed within established departmental policy and procedure; federal, state and countystatutes, rules, regulations and ordinances; equipment operation and maintenance manuals;carpentry reference materials; plans, specifications and blueprints; work zone traffic controls; OSHAstandards. Employee uses reasonable judgment, generally follows established guidelines and refersto supervisor in emergency or unusual situations.PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENTRegular and consistent attendance is required. Work is performed on site. Physical demands may include bending, climbing on rough terrain, hearing alarms and voice conversations, kneeling, frequently lifting up to 60 pounds, pulling, pushing, raking, shoveling, twisting, walking, working at heights and working with hazardous material, fumes Work is performed in an environment which involves everyday risks or discomfortsand sometime adverse weather conditions requiring safety precautions.
