Overview
The Senior Structural Engineer, working under general supervision, plays a key role in leading and delivering engineering assignments of varying scope and complexity within their area of expertise. This position involves close collaboration with architects, engineers, end users, and external consultants to ensure successful project outcomes. The Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for establishing design criteria, verifying the accuracy of drawings, and, when necessary, authorizing or implementing field design modifications. In addition, the role may represent the section or department in resolving technical challenges, as well as planning and coordinating critical work efforts.
The primary objective of this role is to provide in-house mechanical engineering expertise that enables the organization to effectively and efficiently support routine, emergency, and high-priority projects with consistency and reliability.
This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities- Engineer and design projects supporting Capital and Operations & Maintenance budgets for Facilities, including Service Center and commercial building yards, as well as Steam Distribution, Substation Operations, Electrical Operations, IT, and Transportation Operations.
- Provide engineering support for commercial building and yard structural systems (e.g., foundations, geotechnical, steel, concrete), with working knowledge of applicable codes (ACI, AISC, NESC, ASCE, NYC Building Code).
- Review and approve contractor designs, calculations, shop drawings, and submittals.
- Serve as a technical consultant within the company and the industry in the area of specialization.
- Perform cost-benefit analyses and conceptual studies to determine optimal design solutions and support budget development.
- Prepare or direct the preparation of project budgets and appropriation requests.
- Act as Section Manager when delegated and serve as an expert witness when required.
- Direct, coordinate, and review the work of architects, designers, engineers, and external engineering/architectural firms.
Qualifications
Required Education/Experience- Bachelor's Degree in Structural/Civil Engineering and eight (8) years of engineering work experience in areas of design, and application of engineering principles in assigned areas of expertise, or
- Master's Degree in Structural/Civil Engineering and six (6) years of engineering work experience in areas of design, and application of engineering principles in assigned areas of expertise.
- Master's Degree in Structural/Civil Engineering and six (6) years of engineering work experience in areas of design, and application of engineering principles in assigned areas of expertise.
- Demonstrates strong motivation, leadership capabilities, and initiative, required.
- Possesses working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g., ACI, AISC, NESC, ASCE, NYC Building Code), required.
- Strong structural/civil skills, required.
- Exhibits strong analytical skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing demands; demonstrates a proven track record supporting a variety of architectural projects, required.
- Applies strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, required.
- Performs required engineering calculations in support of Capital and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) project designs, required.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license is highly desirable.

- Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold

- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Sit or stand to use a keyboard, mouse, and computer for the duration of the workday.
