This park, spanning 73 miles of a clear, free-flowing river, features historical remnants of the D&H Canal and was once the home of the renowned western novelist Zane Grey. The Upper Delaware River serves as the natural border between New York and Pennsylvania, extending from Hancock, NY in the north to Port Jervis, NY in the south. The river has benefitted people for thousands of years, initially shaping the way of life for the original stewards of the land, the Lenape, Haudenosaunee, and other indigenous peoples. While later supporting a vibrant timber industry due to its swift waters. Today, canoeists and rafters join fishermen and other outdoor recreationists in enjoying the nearly pristine waters.
Upper Delaware S&RR has a volunteer program that crosses all divisions. The volunteer program currently focuses mainly during the summer season with the majority of the program falling in the Division of Interpretation.
