This position assists with moderately complex front office duties using computers and other standard or specialized office equipment. Types documents and enters data and edits, proofreads and files documents. Produces neat and properly-formatted copy. Answers multi line telephone and provides receptionist duties. Work is performed independently and with an advanced level of accuracy, accountability, problem solving, technical skill and interpersonal contacts.
Examples of Duties:
1. Enters text or numeric data following prescribed formats for legislation, correspondence, reports, purchase orders, memoranda and other documents;
2. Checks, edits and proofreads documents for proper format, accuracy and style;
3. Files bills, amendments, reports and other documents and maintains a filing system and may have sole responsibility for a major administrative function within the office;
4. May make assignments, coordinate work and resolve work-related questions in the absence of a supervisor;
5 Answers telephone and greets, assists, or refers visitors;
6. Maintains a broad network of contacts in the legislature and state government and with vendors;
7. Provides answers for agency employees on routine or moderately complex questions for office procedures and policy;
8. Picks up, opens and distributes mail;
9. Collects, checks, sorts, codes, numbers, verifies or processes materials of a routine or moderately complex nature;
10. Determine priorities and coordinates work projects for moderately complex administrative functions;
11. Duplicates and prints bills, reports, stationery and other documents;
12. Maintains, adjusts, cleans and performs routine servicing of equipment;
13. Selects appropriate paper and makes formatting decisions;
14. Receives, records and delivers supplies;
15. Assigns, directs and coordinates the work of messengers and delivery personnel;
16. Performs other related duties as required.
Typical Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications Required:

1. High school diploma and at least three years of administrative assistant experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Knowledge of methods and practices of computer information systems, word processing and database and spreadsheet software.
3. Knowledge of the methods and practices of basic office procedures regarding answering the telephone, interacting with visitors, maintaining records and filing documents.
4. Knowledge of standard English, including grammar, spelling, word usage and punctuation.
5. Basic knowledge of the Connecticut legislature and state government.
6. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
7. Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with legislators, staff, the public and vendors.
8. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others.
9. Ability to work independently.
10. Ability to maintain attention to detail and good organizational skills.
11. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
12. Ability to use computers, good ability with all Microsoft Office products, equipment and other standard office machines and adapt to changing technology.
13. Ability to walk between buildings and assess meeting space needs.
14. Ability to work overtime.

Starting Salary: $55,354. This is an in-person position, Monday thru Friday, with the occasional need for flexible and overtime hours.
