What are the responsibilities and job description for the Technical Product Manager – Telematics & IoT position at Confidential?
About the Role
We build a telematics device with a companion mobile app and cloud application. Customers use it every day and keep asking for more. We have developers ready to build. What we're missing is the person in the middle: someone who understands what customers need, sees what the platform should become, and turns those ideas into concepts developers can build.
We're looking for a technically minded product leader who can connect customer needs with practical solutions, prioritize opportunities, and guide features from concept through development and customer validation.
You'll have a significant voice in shaping the future of an established product, working directly with customers, developers, and company leadership.
We use AI tools throughout the product development process—from initial customer conversations to the specifications our developers receive. We're looking for someone who already understands how to use these tools effectively and can demonstrate the value they bring.
What You Will Own
- Product direction: Help shape the future of our telematics device, mobile app, and cloud application, identifying opportunities to improve functionality and customer value.
- Customer needs: Talk with customers, visit their operations, ask questions, and understand the problems behind their requests.
- Product prioritization: Evaluate customer requests, business value, technical feasibility, and development effort to recommend what gets built next.
- Concepts and specifications: Translate customer needs into screens, workflows, feature definitions, and clear technical specifications that developers can build from.
- AI tools: Use AI to accelerate research, draft specifications, create mockups and prototypes, analyze feedback, and evaluate potential solutions.
- Developer handoff and validation: Provide clear requirements and acceptance criteria, answer developer questions, review completed functionality, and confirm features meet expectations.
- Customer feedback: Validate completed features with customers, evaluate their effectiveness, and identify opportunities for continued improvement.
Required Qualifications
- At least five years of experience in product management, solutions engineering, systems development, or a similar role involving technical products.
- Experience with telematics, IoT, connected equipment, or another product combining hardware and software.
- Working knowledge of how connected devices, firmware, wireless communications, mobile applications, APIs, and cloud platforms interact.
- Demonstrated ability to translate customer needs into product concepts, workflows, and specifications that developers have successfully implemented.
- Practical experience using AI tools to improve productivity, develop concepts, create specifications, or prototype solutions. You should be comfortable demonstrating how you use these tools and verify their output.
- Strong communication skills with both technical and nontechnical audiences.
You Will Be a Good Fit If You
- Are located in north or central Indiana - within a couple hours of Indianapolis.
- Think like an engineer but communicate comfortably with customers.
- Enjoy understanding how things work and finding practical solutions to real-world problems.
- Can turn a loosely defined customer request into a clear concept developers can execute.
- Are comfortable sketching screens, mapping workflows, and explaining how information should move between systems.
- Can balance customer requests with business priorities and development resources.
- Take ownership, make decisions, and adjust when new information suggests a better approach.
- Enjoy working on a small team where your contributions have a direct and visible impact.
What This Role Does Not Require
- Production coding: Our developers write the production code. Your responsibility is defining what needs to be built and ensuring the solution meets the intended requirements.
- People management: You'll guide product priorities and collaborate with developers without necessarily having direct reports.
- A large-company background: We value practical experience, technical curiosity, sound judgment, and demonstrated results over corporate titles or organizational size.
What You Can Expect
- An established product with real customers and opportunities for continued growth.
- Developers ready to build, with you providing clear product requirements and direction.
- Significant ownership of product direction, feature development, and priorities.
- Direct access to company leadership and meaningful input into product decisions.
- A small-team environment where ideas can move quickly from customer conversations to finished solutions.
- Compensation commensurate to the value you bring.
How to Apply
Submit your résumé and complete the screening questions.
During the screening process, we'll ask you to share an example of a product concept or feature you defined that developers successfully built. This could be a specification, mockup, workflow, one-page summary, or before-and-after example. Please exclude confidential or proprietary information.
Be prepared to discuss which AI tools you use, how you incorporate them into your work, and how you evaluate their results.
We're more interested in how you think, communicate, and solve problems than how polished your presentation is.
