About McKague Millard

McKague Millard is a privately owned network of locally managed funeral homes, cemeteries, cremation centers, and monument businesses across Missouri. Our home office is in Jefferson City, and our locations serve Central Missouri, the Kansas City area, North Central Missouri, the St. Louis area, Southeast Missouri, and Southwest Missouri.

We are not corporate, and we never want to be. Each funeral home keeps its own name, its own local staff, and the close-knit feel that its community trusts. Our Marketing & Design team helps each of these businesses look and sound like itself, while staying consistent and professional.

About the role

We're looking for a talented graphic designer who can move easily between many different brand styles. You'll design print and digital ads, marketing materials, and branded items for funeral homes and cemeteries across our network. Each one has its own identity, and your job is to make every piece feel true to that brand.

This is a full-time role that reports directly to the Marketing & Design Director. You'll join a small team that includes a social media manager and two funeral design specialists.

Key responsibilities

Print and digital advertising (primary focus)

  • Design new print ads and update existing ones in Adobe InDesign, meeting publication specs and deadlines
  • Create digital ads for web, search, and social placements

Branding across multiple businesses

  • Apply each funeral home's and cemetery's brand guidelines accurately and consistently
  • Help develop and refresh logos and brand identities as needed
  • Design business cards, branded items, and promotional products

Marketing materials

  • Design informational brochures, flyers, and other printed collateral
  • Lay out and produce the internal company newsletter

Websites

  • Help with monthly updates across websites in the McKague Millard network, including graphics, photos, and content

Signage

  • Design signage when needed
  • Coordinate with local sign companies to provide correct logos, files, and brand information

Writing and other support

  • Help write scripts for occasional radio and TV ads
  • Create occasional social media graphics in support of our social media manager
  • Manage multiple projects and requests at once, keep files organized, and meet deadlines

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design or a related field
  • 1–3 years of professional graphic design experience
  • Proven, hands-on skills in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, verified through native working files and a skills exercise (see How to apply)
  • A portfolio that shows range across different brand styles
  • Strong eye for layout, typography, and detail, including print-ready file setup
  • Good writing skills and comfort helping with ad copy and scripts
  • Organized and self-motivated, with the ability to work remotely and manage several deadlines
  • Clear, kind communication with a compassionate understanding of the families and communities we serve
  • Able to travel occasionally to other locations in Missouri, with a valid driver's license and reliable transportation

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with Canva
  • Logo design experience
  • Experience updating websites or working with a content management system
  • Experience designing for multiple brands, whether at an agency or across several clients

How to apply: Apply through Indeed. Please include your resume, a link to your portfolio, and the working files described below. Portfolios that show work in several different brand styles are especially helpful. We'll start the right candidate as soon as they're ready.

Proof of Adobe skills (required): We value original, hand-built design work. To be considered, you'll need to show that you can do the work yourself in Adobe software.

  • Working files: Share at least two portfolio pieces as native, layered files, such as one packaged InDesign file (.indd) and one layered Photoshop (.psd) or Illustrator (.ai) file. A Google Drive or Dropbox link is fine.
  • Skills exercise: Finalists will complete a short design exercise in InDesign, Photoshop, or Illustrator, either live during an interview or as a take-home project submitted with working files.
  • Walk-through: Be ready to walk us through how you built a portfolio piece, including your layers, styles, and file setup.
  • AI tools: AI can be part of a modern workflow, but the work you present must be your own. Portfolios that rely on AI-generated designs without saying so won't be considered.
