Job Summary
The Director of Human Resources is a strategic and hands-on leader responsible for overseeing all human resources functions for a large, full-service hotel. This role partners closely with executive leadership to drive a positive workplace culture, ensure legal compliance, and support operational excellence. Expert-level knowledge and application of Utah labor laws is required, with responsibility for ensuring the hotel remains fully compliant with all federal, state, and local employment regulations
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Culture
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the General Manager and Executive Committee on all people-related matters
- Lead initiatives that promote employee engagement, retention, and a high-performance service culture
- Align HR strategies with hotel business objectives and brand standards
Labor Law Compliance & Risk Management
- Maintain expert knowledge of Utah labor laws, including wage and hour, leave laws, workers’ compensation, unemployment, and employment practices
- Ensure compliance with federal regulations (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEOC, OSHA) and state/local requirements
- Conduct regular audits of policies, practices, and personnel files to mitigate risk
- Lead investigations related to employee relations, grievances, and disciplinary actions
Employee Relations
- Act as the primary point of contact for employee relations issues, ensuring fair, consistent, and legally compliant outcomes
- Coach department leaders on performance management, corrective action, and conflict resolution
- Foster a respectful, inclusive, and legally compliant workplace environment
Talent Acquisition & Workforce Planning
- Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and retention strategies for a high-volume hospitality workforce
- Partner with department heads to forecast staffing needs and manage seasonal fluctuations
- Ensure compliance with hiring, I-9, background check, and onboarding requirements
Compensation, Benefits & HR Operations
- Administer compensation programs, benefits, and incentive plans in alignment with market trends and legal requirements
- Oversee payroll coordination to ensure accuracy and wage-and-hour compliance
- Manage HRIS systems and reporting
Training & Development
- Lead training initiatives, including management development, compliance training, and leadership programs
- Ensure required training related to safety, harassment prevention, and labor law compliance is completed and documented
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s preferred)
- Minimum 7–10 years of progressive HR leadership experience, preferably in a large hotel, resort, or hospitality environment
- Demonstrated expert proficiency with Utah labor laws and employment regulations
- Proven experience handling complex employee relations and compliance matters
- Strong leadership, communication, and coaching skills
Preferred
- Hospitality industry experience in a full-service hotel with 100 employees
- SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification
- Availability to respond to employee relations or compliance matters as needed
