Job Title: Director of Engineering
Position Overview:
The Director of Engineering provides overall technical direction and leadership across the engineering organization, ensuring alignment with company objectives and customer needs. This role is accountable for guiding a multidisciplinary engineering team, driving innovation, and building a culture focused on collaboration, learning, and continuous improvement. The Director plays a key role in both pre-sale solution development and post-sale execution, ensuring the successful delivery of advanced material handling systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Establish, monitor, and report on engineering Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) tied to business goals across design, product development, controls, and manufacturing engineering.
- Develop and enforce engineering policies, standards, and processes to support an efficient product development cycle.
- Oversee and approve R&D and new product development initiatives, ensuring innovation, technical rigor, and manufacturability.
- Assess and improve engineering systems, tools, and methodologies to ensure reliable, scalable, and quality-driven outcomes.
- Manage schedules, staffing, and project resources to achieve milestones and meet customer commitments, utilizing external partners as needed.
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope and budget, and at the highest quality standards.
- Drive intellectual property (IP) initiatives, including idea evaluation, budgeting, and legal collaboration.
- Stay informed on new technologies and industry advancements, integrating relevant trends into product strategies.
- Promote continuous process improvement practices (Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, etc.) to reduce waste, enhance quality, and improve efficiency.
- Build a culture of innovation by encouraging employees to recommend improvements and proactively solve challenges.
- Lead efforts in recruiting, developing, and retaining top engineering talent.
Leadership & People Management:
- Directly manages leaders and individual contributors across Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, and Controls Engineering.
- Conducts regular performance reviews and provides constructive feedback.
- Ensures employee conduct aligns with company policies and works in coordination with HR as needed.
Travel Requirements:
- Occasional travel may be required to customer sites, training sessions, or local locations.
Qualifications:
- Proven leadership experience with a servant-leadership approach, capable of inspiring and guiding cross-functional teams.
- Strong analytical skills, with proficiency in CRM systems, reporting, and business intelligence tools.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments.
- Demonstrated success in managing complex engineering projects from concept through completion.
- Advanced knowledge of 3D CAD software (SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor).
- Proficiency in 2D AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
- Ability to interpret mechanical/electrical schematics and customer requirements.
- Strong math and analytical skills, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering required; Master’s degree preferred.
- At least 10 years of engineering management experience, including 3 years in a senior leadership role.
- Experience in material handling or a related industry preferred.
Physical & Work Environment:
- Work is primarily performed in a professional office setting within a manufacturing facility.
- Regular activities include sitting, standing, walking, and computer use.
- Occasional presence on the shop floor, which may include exposure to noise, mechanical equipment, airborne particles, and fluctuating temperatures.
