Estimating Manager

We are a search firm representing a client in the industrial and service construction space. We are seeking an experienced Estimating Manager to join a growing operation in the Prince George’s Country area. The organization has a long history of delivering complex electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and plumbing projects, and continues to expand by investing in its people and leveraging innovative practices.

In this leadership role, you will oversee a team of estimators responsible for preparing accurate, full-cost project estimates covering labor, materials, and subcontractor services. Projects span from early conceptual design through final completion, with a focus on large commercial and institutional facilities.

The successful candidate possesses a bachelor’s degree in a related field, 10 years’ experience estimating projects from $1M-40M in this specific market, a proven record of successful leadership and managing others and has worked with various estimating platforms.

Job Duties

• Lead and Manage the Estimating Team: Supervise three estimators, providing mentorship, technical guidance, and regular performance feedback.
• Oversee Bid Preparation: Direct the preparation of complete, accurate, and competitive estimates for HVAC, mechanical, and plumbing commercial projects.
• Review Project Documents: Analyze drawings, specifications, and proposals to define scope, risks, and cost drivers.
• Standardize Processes: Develop and implement consistent estimating procedures, tools, and templates to improve efficiency and accuracy.
• Coordinate with Stakeholders: Collaborate with project managers, operations, procurement, and executive leadership to align estimates with project execution strategies.
• Client & Subcontractor Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with clients, vendors, and subcontractors to support accurate pricing and strengthen market competitiveness.
• Strategic Oversight: Evaluate historical data and market trends to refine cost databases and enhance forecasting accuracy.
• Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve estimating practices, integrate technology, and train staff on industry best practices.

Education and Experience

• 10 years of mechanical/HVAC/plumbing estimating experience
• 5 years of supervisory or team lead responsibilities.
• Experience in QuoteSoft is a requirement
• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• Proven ability to lead and develop a team of estimators while managing multiple bids under tight deadlines.
• Strong knowledge of construction estimating practices, bid preparation, and cost analysis for commercial projects ranging from $1M–$40M.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and negotiation skills with a track record of building strong vendor and client relationships.
• Proficiency with estimating software, spreadsheets, and cost databases.
• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail with the ability to identify risks and opportunities in complex projects.
• Certification in estimating or construction management (such as ASPE, LEED, or equivalent) is an asset.
