A growing behavioral healthcare organization is seeking an experienced Clinical Director to lead clinical operations at a residential behavioral health and substance use treatment facility in the Greater Des Moines area.

Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Clinical Director provides leadership and oversight for all clinical services within the facility. Working collaboratively with medical providers, nursing leadership, admissions, operations, and human resources, this role ensures the delivery of evidence-based, trauma-informed treatment while maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations and accreditation standards.

The Clinical Director is responsible for supervising clinical staff, maintaining documentation quality, supporting program development, and fostering a culture of clinical excellence and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

· Lead and supervise the day-to-day operations of the clinical department.

· Provide leadership and clinical oversight to counselors, therapists, and other clinical staff.

· Determine appropriate levels of care and coordinate treatment planning with the interdisciplinary team.

· Conduct clinical supervision, mentoring, and staff development.

· Oversee client assessments, treatment planning, and discharge planning.

· Review and approve clinical documentation to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and regulatory compliance.

· Conduct routine chart audits and quality assurance reviews.

· Ensure staff are trained in evidence-based treatment practices and approved clinical programming.

· Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences and treatment team meetings.

· Provide individual, family, and group therapy services as needed.

· Serve as a clinical resource for staff while supporting crisis intervention and complex clinical decision-making.

Quality & Compliance

· Ensure compliance with Iowa behavioral health regulations, applicable licensing requirements, HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and accreditation standards.

· Participate in Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement, and Utilization Review initiatives.

· Develop and implement corrective action plans when needed.

· Assist with regulatory surveys and accreditation preparation.

· Recommend enhancements to clinical programming and operational effectiveness.

What You'll Bring

Skills, Knowledge & Competencies

· Strong knowledge of evidence-based behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment.

· Thorough understanding of Iowa behavioral health regulations and licensing standards.

· Knowledge of HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and Joint Commission and/or CARF accreditation standards.

· Excellent leadership, coaching, and team development skills.

· Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.

· Ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, staff, community partners, and leadership.

· Commitment to ethical practice, patient confidentiality, and trauma-informed care.

· Proficiency with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and Microsoft Office applications.

Qualifications

· Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or another behavioral health discipline.

· Active and unrestricted Iowa clinical license (LISW, LMHC, or equivalent).

· CADC, IADC, or equivalent substance use disorder credential preferred or eligibility to obtain.

· Minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in behavioral health and/or substance use disorder treatment.

· Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory or clinical leadership experience.

· Current CPR and First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).

· Successful completion of criminal background screening, drug screening, and required pre-employment health screening.

· Candidates must hold an independent mental health license in one of the following categories: LISW, LMHC, LMFT, or Licensed Psychologist.
