TITLE: Program Hydrologist

LOCATION: Job Corp Water Compact – Ronan, MT

Natural Resources Department

SALARY: $26.16 to $30.07 per hour

CLOSING DATE: Thursday, July 27th, 2023 at 5:30 p.m.


SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
This is not a Testing Designated Position (TDP) within the definition of the CSKT Drug Testing policy.
The successful applicant, if not already employed by the Tribes must pass a pre-hire drug
test and serve a mandatory six (6) month probationary period. The Program Hydrologist is a
full-time, technical, professional-level position working in the Tribes' Natural Resources Department
within the Division of Engineering and Water Resources. This position works under the direct
supervision of the Water Management and Planning Program Manager. The Hydrologist’s duties
include, but are not limited to, the following:


DUTIES:
• Completes specific technical projects related to water conservation, irrigation water supply

and forecasting, irrigation water management, and adaptive management including project
development, completion, and reporting.

  • Prepares technical memoranda and reports on various topics including hydrologic work,
water conservation efforts, and water management planning tools.
  • Develops water budget reports to support Rehabilitation and Betterment projects,
Operational Improvement projects, and irrigation water management.
  • Develops strategic plans for irrigation Operation Improvements identified through the
water rights settlement.
  • Develops strategic plans for stock water mitigation measures identified through the
water rights settlement.
  • Develops strategic plans for on-farm efficiency measures as identified through the water
rights settlement.
  • Interacts extensively with staff within the Division and brings subject matter skills to
support other Division initiatives.
  • Embraces and applies adaptive management as a working model for Program
hydrologic work.


  • Contributes to the development of water management planning tools to support
integrated management of instream flows, reservoir pool evaluations, and irrigation
water supplies under wet, normal, and dry water supply conditions.
  • Assists in the determination of wet through dry water-type years as identified in the
water rights settlement. This is a continuous adaptive management process requiring
frequent within-season update.
  • Assists in the quantification and apportionment of Reallocated Water following
completion of Rehabilitation and Betterment Projects.
  • Serves as a technical member on the Compact Implementation Technical Team as
required, prepares project-level assignments to support various CITT initiatives.
  • Interacts with Division engineering and technical staff to ensure water conservation is
integrated into design and construction at both the planning and project levels.
  • As directed, serves on State and regional water supply and drought planning groups;
  • Supports other hydrologic work related to the implementation of the water rights
settlement.
  • Completes administrative work including workplan development, contract preparation,
budget development and projections, administrative reporting, and procurement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (AS REFLECTED ON THE TRIBAL EMPLOYMENT
APPLICATION):
• Masters of Science with three (3) years of relevant professional-level experience or Bachelors of

Science with a minimum of five (5) years relevant professional-level experience. Education
must be in the field of hydrologic sciences, engineering, agricultural sciences, soil sciences,
or a closely related physical science field with emphasis on surface or groundwater
hydrology. Education and experience must demonstrate analytical and quantitative
aptitude.

  • Possession of a valid Montana driver’s license or ability to obtain within six (6) months.
  • Must have liability or full coverage insurance on personal vehicle (if used to travel off-site in
performance of duties).
  • Must wear Tribal Government identification and safety apparel when conducting filed activities.
  • Required to successfully complete defensive driving course approved by the Department every

three (3) years thereafter.

3. Copy of valid Montana driver’s license.
4. Proof of enrollment in a federally recognized Tribe if other than CSKT.
5. If claiming veteran’s preference, a copy of DD214 must be submitted.
