Position Summary:
Responsible for overseeing the operations/workflow of the laboratory and supervision of staff a hospital-based lab location, while maintaining technical competence and functioning as a bench technologist. Will oversee operations of both technical and non-technical staff to ensure quality operations and timeliness of collections and results.
Responsibilities:
- Provide direction and supervision to technical and lab support staff aligned with company vision, mission, business objectives, and customer expectations, ensuring clear communication regarding assignments, workflow, and responsibilities.
- Assist with staff scheduling, bench assignments, and rotation of duties to maintain competency; maintain personal technical and phlebotomy competency as required, including weekend and holiday bench coverage per location.
- Assist with quality assurance activities, continuous improvement initiatives, and maintaining continual CAP inspection readiness.
- Support staff selection, evaluation, development, and mentoring; prepare timely corrective actions when necessary.
- Ensure completion of all required company documentation within established timeframes, including timecards, reviews, training records, root cause analyses, and learning management system requirements.
- Assist with departmental compliance activities to ensure full staff compliance with regulatory and company standards.
- Support laboratory problem-solving efforts and follow up with providers as needed.
- Assist with updating, maintaining, and controlling laboratory policies and documents in accordance with document control processes.
- Participate in teaching medical laboratory science students and staff, and assist with oversight of technical staff professional development and competency.
- Actively participate in and promote the departmental safety program, fostering a culture of safety and complying with all company and departmental safety and health policies.
- Develop and maintain internal and external professional relationships, perform duties courteously and efficiently with a focus on employee engagement and customer service, and complete other duties as assigned.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Medical Laboratory Science (MLT/MT) with ASCP registration preferred, plus 1–3 years of progressive medical laboratory experience demonstrating integrity, accuracy, sound judgment, and decision-making.
- Demonstrated leadership ability, strong communication and interpersonal skills, good computer proficiency, and the ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and exercise sound reasoning.
- Schedule flexibility to support meetings and employee interactions on second and third shifts.
- Possess visual acuity, hand-finger dexterity, and the ability to sit or stand at computer and laboratory workstations for extended periods while maintaining concentration, comprehension of verbal and written instructions, and accuracy in test performance and result reporting.
- Demonstrate integrity, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm and effective in stressful situations.
- Work in environments with exposure to biohazardous substances and hazardous chemicals while adhering to all company safety, ergonomic, and health policies.
- Comply with all PPE requirements, complete required safety training and health evaluations on time, anticipate and address unsafe conditions, and actively promote safety awareness.
