Founded in 2002, Compliance Week has evolved into the first choice for compliance industry news. CW seeks a staff writer for a small and nimble editorial team to cover compliance news in the financial services industry, which includes banking, securities, fintechs and insurance. An ideal CW staff writer would follow and report on the latest trends and enforcement actions affecting governance, risk and compliance (GRC) in financial services. The beat would include reporting on the U.S. President, Congress, the U.S. Treasury, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the U.S. Department of Justice, among others. Writer does not need to be based in Washington.
Core subject areas include anti-money laundering, sanctions compliance, third-party risk management, consumer protection, and digital assets. Familiarity with AI governance frameworks and their application in financial services, including the EU AI Act and model risk management guidance, is a plus.
A staff writer would be expected to produce 2-4 feature stories per month that analyze trends in the compliance industry, as well as 3-4 daily news items per week. To do this, the writer would develop a deep bench of sources in the compliance industry.
Compliance Week hosts 3-4 live events a year,. A staff writer would be expected to help plan panels and secure speakers for the Compliance Week National Conference in Washington, D.C., Compliance Week’s annual Third Party Risk Management event, being held this year in Chicago, and the Compliance Week AI conference, which was most recently held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
- Pitch stories weekly.
- Write 3-4 news and feature stories per week.
- Contribute to special CW projects like the Inside the Mind of the CCO survey, the annual Excellence in Compliance Awards, and annual feature stories including the Top Ethics & Compliance Failures, and Top Ethics & Compliance Triumphs.
- Meet with sources online and in person.
- Attend 3-4 Compliance Week branded events per year.
- The right candidate is highly motivated, with a desire to join a culture dedicated to providing insights to chief compliance officers found nowhere else.
- Strong interpersonal communication, computer, editing and writing skills.
- Ability to shift to different projects and manage time effectively.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the flexibility to work on both team-based and independent projects.
- Ability to develop sources. You will need to be able to communicate with valued sources on your beat. This will necessitate some in-person meetings with sources and occasional attendance at events.
- Strong writing ability.
- Knowledge of AP style.
- We are based in Boston, but are completely remote.
Salary: $60,000-$90,000 a year depending on experience.
