Position Summary
The Street Outreach Worker engages directly with individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use challenges, or other high-risk circumstances in community settings. This role focuses on building trusting relationships, offering essential resources, conducting needs assessments, and connecting clients with appropriate services such as housing, healthcare, and social supports.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct outreach to individuals on the street, in encampments, parks, and other locations.
- Build rapport and establish trust with unsheltered individuals through consistent and compassionate engagement.
- Conduct assessments to identify immediate needs, such as housing, medical care, mental health support, or food.
- Offer relevant materials, personal care items, and information about available community resources.
- Facilitate referrals and accompany clients to appointments as needed.
- Collaborate with community partners, social service agencies, and law enforcement in a trauma-informed and client-centered manner.
- Maintain accurate documentation and data entry regarding client interactions and outcomes.
- Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and ongoing professional development.
- Promote safety, dignity, and respect for all clients regardless of their circumstances.
- Participate in community events and table at these events to get the word out about what services we provide.
- Participate in presentations to schools, area businesses, community groups and other human service agencies about programs and services available for runaway and homeless youth
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience working with vulnerable or marginalized populations.
- Knowledge of community resources, harm reduction strategies, and trauma-informed care.
- Excellent communication, active listening, and crisis intervention skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
- Comfortable working outdoors and in non-traditional settings across variable weather conditions.
Work Environment
The position requires frequent outreach in community settings, including streets, parks, shelters, and encampments. Some evening hours are required to meet client needs.
Accountability
This position is responsible to the Director of Youth Services who is responsible for training and supervision.
Salary
This position starts at $20/hr and works 20 hours per week
