Job Summary:
The School Site Assistant - Substitute plays a vital role in supporting daily meal service, food preparation, and customer service at an assigned school site. This position assists with meal counting, POS transactions, cash handling, and ensures food safety and sanitation standards are maintained. While the School Site Assistant receives work directives from the School Site Lead, the Lead is not a supervisor. The Site Assistant - Substitute collaborates closely with the School Site Lead and school personnel to ensure efficient meal service and a positive dining experience for students. Site Assistant - Substitute may be placed at any of our school sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Meal Service & Food Preparation
- Assist in preparing and serving meals according to standardized recipes and portion control guidelines.
- Ensure food is presented attractively and meets quality and safety standards.
- Set up and break down service lines efficiently.
- Customer Service & Student Support
- Provide excellent customer service, ensuring professionalism and kindness when assisting students and staff.
- Accommodate students with allergies and special dietary needs in coordination with the School Site Lead.
- Help maintain a welcoming and organized food service environment.
- Meal Counting & Financial Transactions
- Accurately count and record meals for reimbursement purposes.
- Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system, processing transactions and handling cash responsibly.
- Assist with end-of-day financial reconciliation and reporting.
- Kitchen Cleaning & Food Safety
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the kitchen and food storage areas.
- Follow all food safety and sanitation protocols, including temperature logs and proper food handling procedures.
- Assist with dishwashing, sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing surfaces.
- Collaboration & Inventory Support
- Work closely with the School Site Lead and school personnel to ensure smooth meal service operations.
- Receive work directives from the School Site Lead while understanding that the Lead is not a supervisory role.
- Assist in receiving, verifying, and storing food deliveries and supplies.
- Help track inventory usage and report shortages to the School Site Lead.
- Additional Responsibilities
- Attend and participate in meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.
- Follow all district policies and procedures related to food service.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience in food service, preferably in a school or institutional setting is preferred.
- Experience with POS systems and cash handling is preferred.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of food safety regulations and sanitation practices.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to operate a POS system and manage financial transactions accurately.
- Ability to take work direction and collaborate effectively with team members.
Certifications and Licenses:
- Valid California Food Handler’s Certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment).
- TB and criminal justice fingerprint clearance.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds regularly with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting in a kitchen environment.
- Exposure to varying temperatures, including kitchen heat and refrigerated storage areas.
