Job Summary
The Educational Specialist plays a vital role in supporting the SONYC Afterschool Program’s daily operations and curriculum quality. This individual collaborates with school administrators, teachers, and afterschool staff to ensure that all activities align with Common Core standards, the school’s vision, and CMS’s broader program goals.
The ideal candidate is an experienced educator or youth development professional who excels at creating dynamic, student-centered activities and coaching others to deliver high-quality instruction.
Key Responsibilities
Program Support & Curriculum Development
- Meet regularly with school administrators and teachers to align afterschool activities with the school curriculum and vision.
- Provide direct support to school-based staff regarding lesson plan implementation and facilitation.
- Develop and implement interactive, student-centered activities that align with Common Core standards.
- Observe classroom sessions and provide feedback to staff; conduct periodic trainings on lesson planning and facilitation techniques.
- Ensure all structured activities have clearly defined learning outcomes and objectives.
- Review, adapt, and enhance curriculum materials to meet school and CMS program goals.
- Facilitate literacy, STEM, leadership, and enrichment activities when needed.
- Incorporate differentiated instruction strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities.
- Establish and maintain consistent classroom behavior expectations and management systems.
- Guide learning processes toward the achievement of curriculum goals and clear lesson objectives.
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete and submit all required documentation, lesson tracking sheets, and revised lesson plans within specified timeframes.
- Ensure compliance with all required records, reports, and documentation deadlines.
- Maintain accurate statistics, correspondence, and program-related materials.
- Communicate regularly with Program Directors and the Program Manager regarding program needs, progress, and feedback.
Professional Collaboration & Community Engagement
- Serve as an active member of the CMS administrative team.
- Adhere to all CMS policies, procedures, and professional standards.
- Model professionalism and uphold CMS’s founding principles in all interactions.
- Participate in CMS trainings, unit initiatives, and agency-wide committees.
- Collaborate with other CMS programs and participate in community-based and networking activities to enhance awareness of youth services.
- Develop and maintain relationships with referral sources and community partners.
- Attend scheduled supervision sessions with the Senior Director of Youth Development.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) required.
- Experience: 2–4 years of prior experience in youth development, curriculum planning, staff training, or teaching.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and classroom management skills.
- Proven commitment to student empowerment and inclusive education.
- Ability to create and support fun, engaging, and academically enriching activities.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training as required by SACC licensing and CMS professional development standards.

- Hours: Approximately 20 hours per week
- Pay: $37.00/hour
- Location Requirement: Must be able to commute to or relocate to Far Rockaway, NY 11691 prior to starting.
