The Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) Department of the Long Beach Community College District is seeking highly qualified individuals for a current opportunity as an EOPS Program Specialist! This individual will be responsible for performing a variety of specialized and technical duties in support of EOPS program and services in order to recruit, promote and maintain enrollment of low income and academically disadvantaged students in the EOPS program. Incumbents are also responsible for determining eligibility, screening and processing applications for EOPS and Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) programs and monitoring and tracking student academic progress.

We are looking for someone who has obtained an Associate's Degree with a major in sociology, education, social work, business administration or a related field; and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience working with low-income and academically disadvantaged groups in a public service environment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

The Successful Candidate Will Need To

  • Have knowledge of EOPS, NextUp, and CARE program objectives, regulations, and applicable State Education Code and Title V requirements.
  • Understand and apply District policies, administrative practices, recordkeeping procedures, and confidentiality standards.
  • Support and engage economically and educationally disadvantaged students, including knowledge of educational, career, and community resources.
  • Interpret and apply laws, regulations, and District procedures while exercising sound independent judgment.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, including delivering presentations and outreach to target populations.
  • Organize, prioritize, and manage work using standard business software and office systems, while maintaining effective working relationships.

  • Salary: Range 30, $5,268.05 - $6487.73 Monthly
  • Eligibility list: Will be valid for 12 months once approved or ratified by the Personnel Commission. We reserve the right to use the established eligibility list for vacancies (permanent and temporary) in this classification as well as related classifications.
  • Advanced salary placement: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. Advanced salary placement may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Duties

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical and specialized duties and functions in support of Extended Opportunities Program and Services (EOPS), Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) and NextUp operations and programs; recruits, promotes and retains the enrollment of low-income and academically disadvantaged students in the EOPS program; delivers oral presentations on District and EOPS programs and services to potential students and community groups; provides information to students and the public regarding EOPS programs and services; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

EOPS Program Specialist is responsible for performing a variety of specialized and technical duties in support of EOPS program and services in order to recruit, promote and maintain enrollment of low- income and academically disadvantaged students in the EOPS program. Incumbents are also responsible for determining eligibility, screening and processing applications for EOPS, CARE, and NextUp programs and monitoring and tracking student academic progress.

EOPS Program Specialist is distinguished from EOPS Program Manager in that an incumbent in the latter class is responsible for managing and administering District-wide EOPS, CARE, and NextUp programs and services.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:

An Associate’s Degree with a major in sociology, education, social work, business administration or a related field; and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience working with low-income and academically disadvantaged groups in a public service environment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

May require a valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance policy.

Selection Process

The following examination segments are pass/fail and may be utilized during the selection process:

  • screening of the applicant's training, background, and experience
