THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking motivated Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanics to join the team at the Butler County Maintenance Organization. In this role, you will help keep essential equipment in reliable working condition to support safe travel throughout the county. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position performs maintenance, diagnostics, and repair work on diesel and gasoline-powered equipment. Your work will support overall safe operations, fleet reliability, and proper inspection standards. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Vehicle Repair: Fix and overhaul cars, trucks, tractors, and construction equipment including brakes, engines, transmissions, and electrical components
  • Preventive Maintenance: Carry out routine servicing, diagnostics, tune-ups, and adjustments to keep equipment in safe working condition
  • State Inspections: Perform official safety and emissions inspections, complete records, and road test vehicles
  • Diagnostics Work: Identify problems using diagnostic tools and repair motorized hand equipment such as chain saws, compressors, and jack hammers
  • Safety Practices: Maintain a clean workspace, follow safety procedures, use protective equipment, and report injuries or accidents immediately
  • Field Adjustments: Make minor repairs and adjustments in the field, demonstrate repair techniques, and assist other mechanics with major workInterested in learning more? Additional details regarding this position can be found in the position description.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel, overtime and shift work will be required. Work hours are subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary:Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $56,607.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program; or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
  • This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
  • This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N).

Additional Requirements:

  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
