DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position will prepare for a Civil Engineer position by completing a 12-month civil engineering training program. The work performed during this training period will develop practical proficiency in the use of engineering knowledge, skills, and abilities in a bridge engineering, transportation engineering, and/or soils engineering environment. This position could be permanently assigned in either Design, Construction , Operations or Maintenance.
The Civil Engineer Trainee attends and actively participates in all assigned phases and rotations as designated in the Civil Engineer Training program. Rotations include assignments at the District Office, Field Operations, and County Maintenance.
This employee performs civil engineering assignments to develop engineering skills and to achieve working knowledge of all phases of PennDOT operations. These assignments will include conducting preliminary engineering studies, analyzing field conditions, inspecting construction and maintenance projects, drafting geo-technical reports, preparing or reviewing designs for highway or bridge projects, conducting bridge safety inspections, analyzing traffic patterns, preparing recommendations to address traffic safety issues, conducting the testing of materials, and assisting in other related duties as required for the training phase.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment.
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $66,328.00 (before taxes).

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

- One year of civil engineering experience and a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or
- A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field that includes or is supplemented by major coursework in civil engineering.
- Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within ten months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
Special Requirement:
- This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
Other Requirements:
- PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
