The Office of the Burlington County Engineer is currently accepting applications for the entry level position of Civil Engineer Trainee in our Bridge Department.

Candidates who apply for this position should have an affinity for structural design and construction management supported by an academic record that demonstrates satisfactory completion of coursework related to:

  • Structural Design (steel, concrete and/or timber)
  • Foundation Design (shallow & deep foundation and retaining walls)
  • Hydrology and Hydraulics

Civil Engineer Trainees work directly with experienced Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Project Managers who build upon a candidate’s previous academic knowledge by exposing them to actual construction and design projects where their academic skills can be used to solve real-world problems. Civil Engineer Trainees are immediately involved with the design, plan review, and/or field construction operations related to a variety of projects which may include:

  • Bridge Repair & Replacement
  • Roadway Repair & Replacement
  • Drainage Design & Construction
  • Pipe Lining and Restoration
  • Land Development Project Reviews
  • Survey Field Operations
  • Traffic control, signage and striping
  • Construction Management, Inspection and Documentation

Note: This position is only open to residents of the State of New Jersey. You MUST have your principal place of residency in the State of New Jersey in order to be offered employment and you must remain a bona fide resident of the State of New Jersey as a continued condition of employment. Out-of-State residents are ineligible and should not apply and will be automatically rejected. You must provide proof of residency and a copy of your New Jersey Driver’s license in order to be considered a viable candidate prior to being offered employment.

Civil Engineer Trainees are assigned a 40-hour work week.

Experience: Entry level Candidates are expected to demonstrate a strong work ethic and a willingness to invest in themselves as evidenced by academic accomplishments, extracurricular activities, public service and/or past work history.

Candidates in possession of an E.I.T. certificate issued by the N.J. Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors will be given first preference.

Candidates with prior civil engineering related experience including Co-Op’s or internships and/or a strong interest and education related to structural engineering, construction management and inspection also preferred.

Candidates without EIT certification are expected to pursue and obtain their EIT certificate as part of an initial 12 month working test period.

Education: Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university is required. Graduation/Completion of Degree by the end of the current semester is acceptable at the time of application. Proof of graduation will be required prior to hire.

Applicants who graduated from non-ABET accredited colleges or university must submit transcripts that have been evaluated by a recognized evaluation service as recommended by the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors which can be found at:

Applicants with non-ABET accredited degrees who do not submit accreditation credentials along with their transcripts will be automatically rejected.

Salary and Benefits: Starting Salary: $65,088. Overtime for work performed in excess of 40 hours per week or for work performed on approved holidays will be paid at a rate of 1½ times the normal hourly rate.

The position is subject to NJ Civil Service Commission rules and requirements including completion of a 12-month working test period. Successful completion of the working test period will result in immediate advancement to Assistant Engineer level with a commensurate increase in salary (currently $70,000).

The position is covered under agreement with the Communication Workers of America (CWA). Salary increases and benefits are subject to the terms of the current contract.

Location: The position will be in the Office of the County Engineer at 1900 Briggs Road, Mt. Laurel, NJ.
