The Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet advances education, workforce development, and economic opportunity across the Commonwealth. The Cabinet provides education and training programs, employment and reemployment services, unemployment insurance, and disability determination services to help Kentuckians gain skills, find work, and maintain economic stability. It partners with education providers, workforce boards, and employers to align training with labor market needs and oversees labor programs that promote fair and safe workplaces.
The Department of Workplace Standards, Division of Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Compliance, seeks an OSH Industrial Hygiene Compliance Officer I in the OSH Compliance Health Branch. This position will perform entry level duties while in training to detect health hazards in places of employment to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health laws and regulations.
This position will have access to confidential and sensitive information. The successful candidate will be required to ensure the safeguarding and security of all confidential and sensitive information and will be required to complete trainings, sign acknowledgments, follow all policies, and adhere to all statutes and requirements pertaining to the safeguarding and security of confidential and sensitive information while employed and after employment ends.
Duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
The Education and Labor Cabinet (ELC) participates in E-Verify. Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, chemistry, physics, engineering, environmental health, biology, environmental health technology, engineering technology, or a related field.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: NONE
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Graduate teaching or graduate research experience in one of the above or related fields will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Current or prior military experience will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis or professional experience in occupational safety and health or a related field will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Work is generally performed in an office setting when preparing reports or evaluating inspections. Travel is required to conduct inspections. When conducting workplace inspections, employees in this job title are exposed to the same working conditions as those employed at the workplace. May be exposed to potential hazards which may require the following of safety precautions.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.

- Learns to write reports of inspections and investigations and recommends the issuance of citations and penalties to employers. Begins minor inspections.
- Assists the industrial hygienist in conducting routine health inspections and investigations.
- Learns to utilize sampling techniques and calculations to document hazards.
- Learns to recognize, sample, and cite violations of KY OSH standards. Learns industrial hygiene standards and techniques.
- Attends professional training courses to develop competency in the field of occupational safety and health.
- Develops skills to calibrate and use sampling equipment.
