Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources strives to maintain healthy populations of fish and wildlife across the state. The employees of Kentucky Fish and Wildlife are passionate about the resource they manage. The Information and Education Division of Kentucky Fish and Wildlife teaches the public about the importance of conservation and our agency's role in it.

This Conservation Educator I is within the Recruitment, Retention, and Reactivation (R3) Branch- Hunter Education Section and is responsible for the development and the presentation of limited types of conservation education programs or outdoor skills programs in an assigned area to include hunter education courses, archery or other shooting skills courses.

This is a grant funded time-limited (GFTL) position. This means it is a position that is paid entirely as the result of a grant. The duration of employment shall not exceed the life of the grant that funds the position. An employee appointed to a GFTL position is required to meet the minimum requirements for the classification. Further, an employee appointed to a GFTL position is designated as an unclassified (non-merit) employee. A GFTL employee is eligible to receive benefits at the same level as a classified (merit) employee in a permanent position.

Responsibilities and job duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Works with schools and community groups in assigned areas in scheduling and teaching hunter education/R3 events and programs that promote and/or enhance appreciation of Kentucky's hunting environments.
Provides material or logistical support.
Maintains inventory of agency firearm equipment and teaching materials, including those loaned to volunteers in the community. Responsible for maintaining equipment in good working order.
Teach shooting skills courses with Recruitment, Retention & Reactivation events or hunter education courses.
Compiles weekly reports on local and regional events. Keeps records concerning event contact information, dates and participants.

Process at least one certification in hunter education, hunter education instructor, boater education, Project Wild, American Red Cross cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)/first aid/automated external defibrillator (AED), or American Red Cross lifeguarding.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural or physical science, education, recreation, or related field.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be at least 21 years old. Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Must obtain either a hunting or fishing license issued by the KDFWR, Hunter Education certification, and a certification in first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) during the first six months of employment. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an outdoor classroom setting and/or on outdoor firing ranges. May work in a residential camp setting with 200 campers per week.
