What are the responsibilities and job description for the IT Specialist (Data Engineer) position at Commodity Futures Trading Commission?
The Division of Data (DoD or Division) serves as the leading authority on developing, implementing, and operating the Commission’s data strategies. The Division is comprised of the Data Operations and Standards Branch (DOSB) and the Enterprise Data Analytics (EDA) section. This position is in the DOSB Branch.
Qualifications:
CT-13: To qualify for the CT-13 level you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS/CT-12 level). Specialized experience is defined that through which one has gained experience:
• Designing and implementing enterprise data architecture, pipelines, and modeling solutions
• Applying federal data governance and security frameworks
• Developing data integration and orchestration solutions
• Supporting BI, analytics, and/or machine learning workflows
• Applying DevOps practices to data engineering
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Responsibilities:
As a Data Engineer, you will:
• Design, implement, and maintain enterprise data environments including data lakes, data warehouses, and lakehouse architectures.
• Develop normalized, dimensional, star, and snowflake models to support advanced analytics.
• Build ETL/ELT pipelines for structured and semi‑structured datasets and implement automated data quality monitoring.
• Develop and manage event‑driven and streaming data pipelines using modern orchestration frameworks.
• Implement data governance, classification, retention, and stewardship practices aligned to federal standards.
• Apply Zero Trust security principles and support ATO processes consistent with NIST SP 800‑53, FISMA, and FedRAMP.
