This is a Variable Hour Employee position, offering 20 - 24 hours a week, at an hourly salary of a Step E Police Officer ($55.67)

We are seeking POST Certified Police Officers to join the Commerce City Police Department. Must have a minimum of five (5) years full-time experience as a patrol officer and a minimum of two (2) additional years of full-time experience as a School Resource Officer for a full-service law enforcement agency to be considered for this position.

The Commerce City Police Department fosters and actively engages in community-based policing initiatives that promote a standard of excellence in providing police services in Commerce City and the region. The Commerce City Police Department is seeking the most qualified candidates who can demonstrate the personal character and competency necessary to contribute to the Department's success. The most qualified candidates will be dedicated to the service of others over self, will have experience or an articulate understanding of the community-based policing philosophy, can demonstrate their ability to communicate and problem solve effectively, and can work collaboratively in a team environment.

General Statement Of Position

The Commerce City Police Department's Youth Services Unit, in collaboration with community partnerships, strives to maintain an alliance between youth, families, the community, and the Police Department, utilizing teamwork, mentoring, and accountability as tools to assist our youth in becoming mature and responsible citizens. As School Resource Officers, the Youth Services Unit serves the Adams County Youth Initiative, Adams 14 School District, Brighton 27J School District, several charter school entities, and the Commerce City Parks, Recreation, and Golf Department. In addition to our community partnerships, the Youth Services Unit manages the Commerce City Police Explorer program, the Commerce City Youth Police Camp, and several other youth-based programs. The Commerce City Police Department provides School Resource Officer services to two school districts--Adams 14 and Brighton 27J--with 19 schools that serve about 14,000 students. The Youth Services Unit consists of seven School Resource Officers and one Sergeant who reports to the Special Operations Community Services Commander.

Selected candidates will be offered a five (5) year assignment, with possible opportunities for extensions up to an additional five years based on the needs of the Department as a School Resource Officer. A selected candidate's experience may be considered toward a reduction in new hire training time. Selected candidates are expected to complete the Department's shortened In-house and Field Training programs for newly hired police officers.

At the discretion of the Chief of Police, starting pay may be commensurate with the applicant’s years of service with their current agency. For example: if an applicant has five (5) years of service with their current agency, the applicant may be eligible to start at step E; currently $115,798 annually.

Additional Essential Duties

In addition to those essential duties as a Police Officer, the following are crucial duties that shall be required for those selected as School Resource Officers:

A School Resource Officer ("SROs") works out of the Operations Division, performing general and specific law enforcement functions within the municipal environment and observing and acting upon circumstances that call for law enforcement intercession. A School Resource Officer is responsible for enforcing state and local public safety and welfare laws.

Duties

School Resource Officers, focused on the safety and security of school campuses and school facilities, who shall perform the following functions and duties ("Services" ):

  • Respond to and address violations of the law that occur on or around school facilities,
  • Respond to and address violations of the law that involve students or school personnel,
  • Investigate, document, and report violations of the law and incidents that occur related to school facilities,
  • Investigate, document, and report violations of the law and incidents that occur related to students or school personnel,
  • Employ Restorative Justice and Procedural Justice concepts where appropriate,
  • Respond to and address Safe2Tell reports as needed,
  • Participate in student threat/risk assessments as required,
  • Coordinate, plan, and manage school drills (i.e., Lockdown, Fire, Tornado) as needed,
  • Communicate safety/security issues to school administration,
  • Provide staff training pertaining to safety/security issues,
  • Provide safety and security-related presentations to students as needed,
  • Provide law enforcement-related educational presentations to students as needed,
  • Conduct school facility security assessments with District staff,
  • Address school campus-related traffic concerns as identified, and
  • Any other duties specified by the Chief of Police or his/her designee.

Eligibility

Minimum Qualifications

An Ideal Applicant Should Have The Following

  • At least 21 years old
  • Possess a valid Colorado driver's license
  • Earned a High School Diploma or a General Education Development (GED) or high school equivalency certificate
  • Earned a Colorado P.O.S.T. Peace Officer's Certification
  • Two (2) years as a Sworn School Resource Officer with a law enforcement agency

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ten (10) or more years of law enforcement experience
  • Five (5) or more years of School Resource Officer Experience
  • Basic School Resource Officer Certification
  • Spanish Language Fluency
  • Bilingual language skills, or American Sign Language skills
  • Associate's Degree or at least 60 semester hours or the equivalent from an accredited institution.

Equipment Used, Work Environment and Physical Activities

  • Driving: Must be able to operate motor vehicles, including motorcycles, car, light pickup
  • Trucks, 4-wheel-drive vehicles, utility task vehicles (UTV), golf carts and bicycles
  • Office equipment: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, fax, scanner, copy machines and phones
  • Computer equipment: Must be able to use a Mobile Computer Terminal, two-way radios, cellular phones, and tablets.
  • Computer Data Entry: Must be able to utilize computerized data entry equipment and various word processing, spreadsheet and/or file maintenance programs to enter, store, retrieve and/or prepare reports on activity statistics, correspondence, memoranda, etc., as requested or otherwise necessary
  • Other equipment: Must be able to use personal protection equipment, firearms, restraint devices, handcuffs, batons, radar/lidar units, first aid equipment, crime scene technician kits, blood draw kids, drug test kits
  • Language skills: Must be able to talk and hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear)
  • Mathematical skills: Must be able to utilize basic mathematical formulas to add, subtract, multiply and divide
  • Reasoning activity: Must be able to identify and define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions using a variety of concrete and abstract variables; make independent judgments in the absence of supervision
  • Physical activities: Must be able to walk, stand, run and engage in physical confrontation; physical demand requirements are for medium to heavy work
  • Lifting: Must be able to lift up to 88 pounds independently
  • Vision and hearing: Must be able to communicate via telephone, cellular phone and two-way radio; to differentiate between colors and shades of colors
  • Exposure to environmental conditions: Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 35 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects. May be exposed to heat, cold, odors, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, smoke, wetness, humidity, dusts, disease, explosives, intense light, electrical current, or violence. Considerable exposure to stressful situations as a result of human behavior. In field operations, exposure to stress as well as occupational hazards is of considerable magnitude; works under high-risk conditions.

Paid Time-off Benefits

  • Holidays: There are 11 paid holidays each year.
  • Eligibility for Pay Increases: Employees are eligible for a pay increase during their annual appraisal following a successful evaluation. Pay increases do not come at the time of the six-month introductory evaluation.
  • General Leave: Leave banks are granted to employees after six months of full-time employment. General Leave may be used for vacations, personal business, illness, or other reasons as requested by the employee and approved by his/her supervisor.

  • Provided Equipment: The City provides equipment, including uniforms, leather gear, boots, gloves, and gear bags. Recognizing that weapon preference is highly personal, officers will purchase their own firearms that meet department specifications and standards. In the event the officer does not purchase their own weapon, the City will provide a weapon for up to one year. The City also provides a “Welcome Package”.
  • Weapon Reimbursement Program: This City provides an interest-free loan to assist officers in purchasing the necessary weapons and weapon-related items, to include a home safe.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP): We provide a confidential Employee Assistance Program to help support you and your family on any issue of concern. Eight private counseling sessions are available on a range of needs including, but not limited to marital issues, parenting concerns, grief counseling, supervisor issues, and drug and alcohol abuse.
  • Tuition Reimbursement: The City provides a tuition reimbursement program that reimburses qualified educational expenses.
  • Personal Computer Employee Purchase Program: To encourage the development of employee computer skills, the City offers an interest-free loan to you for the purchase of computer hardware (including a Desktop or Laptop) and software. The employee must have successfully completed their 6-month Introductory Period for eligibility.
  • Recreation Center Membership: Employees and family members are eligible for a membership to the Commerce City Recreation Center for $5.00 per person per year.
  • Golf Course Green Fees: Employees can play the City's award-winning Buffalo Run Golf Course at a rate of $9.00 for 9-holes or $18.00 for 18-holes. Employees can also purchase golf merchandise at discounted prices.
