Job Summary:

The Assistant Chief Engineer supports the Chief Engineer in leading and overseeing all maintenance and landscaping operations related to the overall physical condition of the hotel and its outlets. This role assists in ensuring the efficient, safe, and compliant operation of all building systems, including HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, water treatment, and grounds. The Assistant Chief Engineer helps manage daily maintenance activities, supervises maintenance staff, coordinates vendor services, and supports preventative maintenance, energy conservation, and emergency preparedness initiatives. This position plays a key role in maintaining operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and a safe, well-maintained environment for guests and associates.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist in overseeing the physical operations of the property, including HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, water treatment, electrical systems, and grounds/landscaping.
  • Support the operation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of Building Automation Systems (BAS), identifying system deficiencies and assisting with corrective actions.
  • Execute and maintain the property’s preventative maintenance program to ensure optimal equipment performance and longevity.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of energy conservation initiatives to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs.
  • Support the creation and execution of emergency response programs; participate in and assist with safety inspections, drills, and emergency preparedness planning.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal codes, regulations, and safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed operational logs, maintenance records, and documentation for auditing and performance tracking.
  • Assist in training, supervising, and coaching maintenance staff to promote a safe, productive, and professional work environment.
  • Support hiring, scheduling, performance evaluations, and ongoing development of maintenance personnel.
  • Participate in the Manager on Duty (MOD) program as scheduled and assist with departmental administrative responsibilities.
  • Assist in the preparation and management of the engineering department budget in alignment with organizational guidelines.
  • Support vendor management, service contracts, and competitive bidding processes to ensure quality and cost control.
  • Act as a liaison between engineering, operations, and other departments to ensure timely resolution of maintenance and facility needs.
  • Perform hands-on maintenance and repairs as needed to support operational demands.

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Ability to push, pull, lift, shovel, reach, bend, and grasp
  • Regularly lift up to 55 pounds
  • Occasionally exert up to 100 pounds during Manager on Duty (MOD) shifts or emergency situations

Qualifications, Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate’s degree or Technical School diploma in Engineering, Facilities Maintenance, or a related field preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a similar engineering or maintenance leadership role, preferably within a hotel or resort environment
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, and life safety systems
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) preferred
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and perform effectively in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive, hands-on approach
