Under the general supervision of the laboratory manager, the medical technologist performs various complex and routine clinical laboratory assays, evaluates validity of results obtained, troubleshoots equipment and/or testing problems, and accurately reports test results, according to laboratory policy and procedure. Position duties may affect direct patient care through the completion of analytical tests that allow others to care for patients.
Job Requirements
Knowledge of/Skill/Ability to: Confidentiality: Frequent access to patient records; expected to maintain full confidentiality in accordance to HIPAA guidelines. Skills: Strong written, oral and organizational skills required. Attention to detail is required. Experience with blood collection technique on all age groups. Must be able to perform high complex testing. Must have working knowledge of pre-analytical, analytical, as well as post analytical testing variables and how to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance thus working toward achieving the highest standard for clinical laboratory testing. Computer skills, excellent customer service, and being an ongoing liaison between clients and providers. Knowledge in laboratory compliance and Medical Necessity. Must be able to multitask under stressful situations. Must have working knowledge of test result interpretation in order to address questions from clients and providers.
License/Certification
Medical Technologist (ASCP) or equivalent registration, or MT eligible under Medicare laboratory regulations (must obtain within 6 months of hire). BLS certification required through American Heart Association. Must provide a copy of High School Diploma or equivalent.

Physical Demands and Work Environment Conditions / ADA Compliance
May occasionally work in a strained or difficult position. There is some exposure to hazards that might cause relatively serious injury or illness if proper safety precautions are not taken in dealing with patient specimens, acids, and infectious tissues and body fluid. Position involves standing, walking, stooping, and occasional carrying and lifting of lightweight materials (up to 20 pounds). May be required to sit for extended periods of time. Requires visual acuity and depth perception to recognize words and numbers; and hand and finger dexterity and hand/eye coordination to use a computer keyboard and common office equipment.
