CTE Agriculture Education Teacher- 12 months

 

The Agricultural Education Teacher will provide rigorous instruction in agriculture, food, and natural resources that prepares students for postsecondary education, careers, and leadership opportunities through an integrated program of classroom/laboratory instruction, Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE), and FFA activities. This is a 12-month position based at Columbia Early College High School in Tyrrell County Schools.

 

Position Details

  • Term of Employment: 12 months (calendar year) in accordance with NC Agricultural Education guidelines and local board policy.
  • Reports To: School Principal (with collaboration from CTE/CTE Director as assigned).
  • Salary: Based on the North Carolina State Teacher Salary Schedule plus applicable local supplements, commensurate with licensure status and experience.

 

Licensure and Qualifications

  • Must hold or be eligible to hold a North Carolina Professional Educator License in Agricultural Education as issued by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Agricultural Education or a closely related field that meets NCDPI Agricultural Education licensure requirements or an Associates degree in an Agricultural related field with 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and classroom management skills to work effectively with high school students, parents, staff, and community partners.
  • Preferred: Experience teaching agriculture at the secondary level, advising FFA, and supervising SAEs; experience managing agricultural laboratory facilities (greenhouse, land lab, garden, animal facilities, or shop).

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, deliver, and assess engaging instruction aligned to the NC CTE Agricultural Education courses offered at Columbia Early College High School, using the district-approved curriculum and state standards.
  • Provide hands-on, laboratory-based learning experiences in areas such as animal science, plant science, horticulture, agriscience, agricultural mechanics, natural resources, and agribusiness, as appropriate to assigned courses.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs, interests, and abilities of students while maintaining high academic and technical expectations.
  • Use a variety of assessment strategies to monitor student progress and provide timely feedback to students, parents, and administrators.
  • Integrate core academic skills (math, science, reading, and writing) into agricultural instruction to support college and career readiness.

 

FFA and Student Leadership

  • Serve as advisor for the school's FFA chapter, providing leadership and supervision for FFA meetings, activities, and Career Development Events (CDEs) in alignment with NC FFA and National FFA guidelines.
  • Promote student leadership development, personal growth, and career success through active, inclusive FFA programming and intra-curricular activities.
  • Coordinate student participation in local, regional, state, and national FFA events, which may require some evening, weekend, and summer responsibilities.

 

Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE)

  • Guide students in planning, developing, and maintaining meaningful SAE programs that extend learning beyond the classroom into work-based and experiential learning settings.
  • Conduct supervisory visits and maintain documentation of student SAEs throughout the 12-month employment period.
  • Collaborate with families, employers, and community partners to secure and support appropriate SAE placements.

 

Program Management and Community Relations

  • Maintain safe, organized instructional spaces, including classrooms, laboratories, greenhouse, land lab, shop, and/or animal facilities as applicable.
  • Manage and account for program resources, equipment, supplies, and inventory in accordance with school and district procedure.
  • Work with an advisory committee, school administration, and community stakeholders to continuously improve the agricultural education program and promote its value within Tyrrell County Schools.
  • Assist with recruitment and retention of students into the agricultural education program and related pathways.
